The other day, I went to a slope a little ways away!

On the way back, I discovered an incredible slope that looked just like something out of *Laputa*!

This is the "On-Site Construction" section.

This is the type of formwork where you build the formwork and pour the concrete into it.

It's quite an old one.

The reason is that the anchor caps are made of concrete.

I'm pretty sure the anchor caps are made of concrete, but that was more than 25 years ago.

In all the construction projects I've been involved with in the past, we've never done this before.

We have, on occasion, embedded the aluminum cap directly into the concrete.

 

There is an anchor head inside this concrete.

Actually, I found a spot where the concrete had come loose and the head was exposed, so I pulled over to take a picture.

You don't get to see a sight like this very often!

There is still concrete on the head.

However, since the PC steel strand is already covered in rust, I suspect—though I can't say for sure—that the rust has spread all the way to the inside.

 

If left as is, the tension will be relieved when the wedge eventually rusts and rots.

Once the load is removed, the weight that was previously supporting the structure will decrease, which could cause it to collapse.

That said, it doesn't mean it'll happen right away. (There's a good chance it won't happen at all.)

 

To put it simply, let's say there are 10 anchors in total, each under a tension of 100 kN.

10 bars × 100 kN = 1,000 kN

If a load of 1,000 kN is applied to the mountain to prevent it from sliding, and one of those loads is removed, the total load becomes 900 kN.

Assuming a safety factor of 1.2, 1,000 kN ÷ 1.2 = 833 kN

Simply put, if one more bolt comes out, the balance between the rock’s strength (weight of the rock mass) and the anchor’s tension will be disrupted.

 

That does sound a little scary, but it’s not something you can figure out with a simple calculation, so I can’t really say for sure, lol.

But a slope that looks this good really catches your eye, doesn't it? (Huh? Is it just me?? lol)

 

It was just a small thing, but it got my imagination running wild.

How did the concrete head come off?

Did a car hit it?

Could the head, which is already tilted, have been unloaded?

How far has the rust spread?

 

The ground anchor projects from the past are also very interesting.

The slopes around you have stories like that, too!

As someone who loves all kinds of civil engineering structures, this is just too good to resist!
