I used to hear that a lot, too.

That said, I guess it really comes down to how you say it, lol.

It's true for everyone: when someone speaks to you in a high-handed manner, you end up responding in kind.

Without even stopping to think, “They’ll probably get mad if I say this,” I just blurt out something like, “You’re a subcontractor, so just do it!”—and, sure enough, they get mad at me lol.

On top of that, they act like we're just subcontractors.

 

First of all, the client and the contractor (prime contractor) are on equal footing!

That means the general contractor and the first-tier subcontractor are in the same position.

The branch manager at a company I know often says,

"We and our subcontractors are in this together! There's no way we can make a profit without our subcontractors making one too!" he says.

He's really considerate of his subcontractors, so it's easy to work with him lol

 

On the other hand, there are also people who act condescendingly.

I’ve even been told, “Why do we have to worry about the subcontractors’ profits? I don’t know anything about their profits!” lol

 

That’s exactly what you’d say: “Well, then, you try it!”

I'd just say, "Fine, then," hang up, and block them. (A mature, cool response)

But depending on how you phrase it, things like this might not happen, right?

For example

Maybe try phrasing it as if you're asking for advice.

You could try explaining it while showing the drawings.

Why don't you try saying it while we're having lunch together?

Why not try bringing it up during a break?

Why not try saying it first thing in the morning, during the cool hours of the evening, or when you're feeling calm?

How about trying to say it while singing and dancing like in a musical?

The times you should absolutely avoid saying anything are, of course, when you're feeling frustrated or when you're busy.

This goes both ways.

Since your situation often comes across to the other person, please be mindful of the timing.

This is what is commonly referred to as communication skills.

 

But there are some people who aren't good at it, right?

In situations like that, you should just approach them with sincerity and talk it over.

This is the only option.

That way, the craftsmen will listen to you seriously and do their best to accommodate your needs.

 

The supervisor and the craftsman are in this together when it comes to that construction project.

If either one is missing, we can't do a good job.

At that scene, we absolutely need each other.

With that in mind, are you confident in the way you express yourself and communicate?

Is your message coming across clearly and accurately? Does your attitude come across as arrogant?

Do you make the first move when greeting others?

It's not like you have to be overly humble or anything, but just do a good job, lol.

 

And I think the key to making things go well is to always be the one to strike up a conversation.

Your communication skills depend on how often you strike up conversations. (It's okay if you mess up or the conversation fizzles out.)
