Fall Asleep at 1 Hz | The Neuroscience Behind Why Karaoke Makes You Sleepy

Hello, everyone.

This is Enta.

The other day, after our year-end party, we went to karaoke for the after-party.

I don't sing much, so I got sleepy all of a sudden lol

And then I got to sleep for about two hours lol

I love singing! But I'm the type who gets sleepy when I drink, so in a dimly lit karaoke booth...

Why do people get sleepy when there's noise around? (I'm not saying karaoke is noise, though! lol)

For example, don't you get sleepy when you're sitting on the train?

Don't you ever get sleepy when you hear a rotary percussion drill pounding away at bedrock from up on the scaffolding?

I used to sleep a lot when I was younger. I’d get so sleepy while waiting for drilling to start up on the scaffolding, lol.

It would be great if it were that warm, sunny spring weather, wouldn't it?

I get sleepy even in the middle of winter, though...

Actually, it seems there’s a certain mechanism behind that.

People tend to fall asleep more easily when they're not sure whether they're shaking or not, rather than when there's a distinct sensation of shaking.

That’s exactly why kids fall asleep in the car. They wake up as soon as the car stops.

Even with rotary percussion, the platform shakes slightly.

Apparently, a swaying motion of about once per second is the most conducive to sleep.

1 Hz = one oscillation per second.

It seems that rocking a child at 1 Hz helps them fall asleep more easily.

With rotary percussion, the strikes would probably be even faster, but,

The vibrations transmitted to the scaffolding might actually be surprisingly slow.

At times like that, even that noise starts to sound like a lullaby, and the light rhythm and vibrations pull me right into the world of sleep lol.

But if you try to sleep on the scaffolding at this time of year, you'll catch a cold, so please be really careful lol.

The flu is going around again.

Drinking water every 30 minutes helps flush viruses from your throat into your stomach, which can help prevent colds.

Gargling with tea is also very effective.

It’s the end of the year. Let’s be extra careful and take our time at work. We need to be especially cautious during this time of year!

See you later.
