Well, as I often mention on this blog, I generally know where things tend to fall apart.

The area where the landslide is occurring is a natural slope (cliff) that has never collapsed before.

Landslide

Let's take a look around your home.

Is there a house located a little way up in the mountains that has areas around it that have collapsed and been patched up?

By "measures" here, I mean: Have work such as steel framing, sprayed mortar, rebar insertion, and anchor installation been performed?

Generally speaking, if areas that have collapsed in the past have been repaired, it should be fine as long as there isn't a collapse deep underground.

However, caution is needed if there are houses in mountain valleys or if the surrounding mountains have not collapsed.

In valleys, there is always the risk of debris flows and flash floods, and if there are slopes or cliffs that haven’t collapsed,

There is a risk of surface collapse due to rain.

Deep-Seated Landslides and Shallow Landslides

The saturated mountain is lifted by the water, and the top layer flies off with a *thud*.

It is extremely dangerous because the flying debris is making its way down through the mountain valleys.

 

It’s true that it’s hard to take preventive measures on a daily basis.

So, as a precaution for people living in areas like this, the first thing to do is not to go home.

There's no such thing as a completely safe home.

Don't go home when there's a warning. I think that's the safest thing to do.

If you have family, it is important to evacuate to a designated evacuation area, such as a school.

People often ask me to let them know if there are any warning signs.

That said, it’s something you often hear on the internet and in the news.

However, I’ll include my thoughts on this as well.

 

Preliminary phenomena

An amateur would never notice a crack in the cliff, and it wouldn't be visible at night.

  • Pebbles are falling one by one

It can be hard to tell because the wind might cause it to fall. At this point, the mountain is already in a saturated state and is floating. It’s trying to float.

It doesn't take long for them to start flying, so by the time you think, "Oh, a rock's falling," it's already too late.

And you can't see at night.

  • Water gushes out from the cliff

There's a chance we might be able to see the moment it flies at the limit of saturation, but it might be impossible to convey that.

  • Spring Water Stops Flowing or Becomes Cloudy

It's completely off the ground—we're almost at the point where the dirt's about to fly. You can't see anything at night.

  • I hear the ground rumbling.

It's already in motion. There's no stopping it now.

If you see any warning signs, it's over. There's nothing you can do at that point, so just run.

Evacuation

Anyway, please evacuate from there with your family.

If you can't make it in time, evacuate to the second floor. (Limited to homes built about 10 years ago.)

If it's an old house, you'd better get out of there.

I think a reinforced concrete house should be fine to a certain extent. (As long as it's not an illegal structure.)

As for the approximate weight of the soil, it is about 2 metric tons per cubic meter (1 m × 1 m × 1 m).

That sediment also contains rocks ranging in weight from several hundred kilograms to several metric tons.

Two metric tons of dirt, rocks, and other debris are barreling toward the house. And it’s happening one after another.
