As expected, public works contracts have been somewhat sluggish lately.
Even we slope contractors have a lot of downtime, so we often get messages asking, “Do you have any work?”
It really makes you nervous when there's so little work, doesn't it?
I wonder where the leveling off went...
But that's beside the point.
I guess as working conditions in the construction industry keep getting better and better, productivity will just keep going down, lol.
Since I used to work for a major company myself, I understand the issue of working hours very well.
At major firms, it's only natural to handle multiple cases at once when you're busy.
While looking after my junior colleagues, I have to come up with a budget, submit a proposal, and figure out the construction plan,
What about the revised budget? Have you finalized the payments to subcontractors? Monthly financial statements, weekly reports, monthly reports, government agency performance reports,
Subcontractor work volume, site management, monthly operations reports, tomorrow's schedule, tomorrow's weather, etc....
Employees at major general contractors are super busy!
There are a ridiculous number of internal documents, and to top it all off, there's compliance~~~~~! lol
And it's totally normal to get home at 9 or 10 p.m. Sometimes I can't even get home lol.
This kind of thing just makes you go, “Ugaaaaaa!” these days, doesn’t it?
However, this situation still holds true not only for our slope stabilization industry but also for field workers at general contractor firms.
Even though they talk about work-style reform,Thanks to Abenomics, the public works sector is extremely busy.
I can't take time off because of internal paperwork.
I can't take time off because we're on a tight schedule.
I can't take a day off because there's no one else here.
I'm swamped at work and can't take a day off.
I've taken on too many construction projects, so I can't take a break.
The sales targets are so high that I have no choice but to take on work, so I can't take time off.
For some reason, I just can't seem to take a break.
I really feel sorry for them.
Well, the pay is higher to make up for that.
It's quite a bit higher than when I was there.
But is that fun? Does it make you happy? Does it make you feel fulfilled?
Under normal circumstances, we spend more than half of our lives working.
Well, then, you’d want to make your work a little more enjoyable, right?
Are you enjoying your work?
How about your family? Do you go out to eat with your wife? Do you get to play with your kids?
There are actually quite a few people who enjoy working as site supervisors or slope construction supervisors as a career.
I do this job because I like slope work, too.
There are a lot of people in this industry who love civil engineering and manufacturing.
If you want to do the things you love without overdoing it,
I recommend using a local contractor.
If you work for a major company, you can take on big projects.
Whether the contract amount is 200 million or 300 million, companies like NEXCO and JR can probably handle contracts worth 1 billion or 2 billion through discretionary contracting. (For slope work, the maximum would probably be around 300 million, right?)
Since the frame is large, it's a bit of a challengeKai is no slouch either.Right?
On the other hand, it’s incredibly, unbelievably exhausting! And the hours are super long.
If you use a local contractor, they’ll be more flexible with scheduling and won’t require as much paperwork.
"Compliance? What's that?? Is it something you eat??"—that kind of reaction happens quite often.
If you want to be a site supervisor but have had enough of working for major companies, try a local firm.
My salary will go down. (It's been pretty high lately.)
As you might expect, both the workload and the level of responsibility drop significantly.
It should also significantly ease the emotional burden.
That's one option, too.

That's wonderful, but I wish you'd be a little kinder to yourself.
As someone who’s also a director, it really breaks my heart whenever there’s a case of death from overwork or something like that.
I hope he enjoys his life as a director even more.
It's better not to do work you don't enjoy!
This company wouldn't run without me!
Some people might say that, but even without you, a major general contractor can still run its business just fine.
(This mindset is more common among responsible, decent people and among those who are incompetent but have a lot of pride.)
Companies run on systems. If it’s going to make you sick, you’re better off just quitting and moving on.
That's not a failure.
This is the start of success, isn't it? (But it's important to quit in a way that makes sense.)
