The general contractor often asks, “What should we do about the overhang on the slope?”

People ask me that.

I figured some of you might be wondering, “What exactly is an overhang?” so I drew a picture.

This is what happens when a natural slope is gradually eroded or partially collapses.

This drooping part is called an overhang

"Hang" means "to dangle," and

Since "over" means "excessive,"Excessive sagging

(This expression is kind of crazy, lol)

So, how should we handle this as a slope protection measure?

If cut-and-fill work is included in the design, cutting the hillside at a consistent slope isn't really a problem, but,

If we limit the work to slope grading as much as possible and avoid cutting into the ground, the excavation will be minimal.

Even with manual shaping, the idea is to remove only the overhanging parts.

It looks something like this.

While it’s easier to install the material if you can leave it lying flat as much as possible, please be sure to check the property lines carefully, as they may affect the installation.

After cutting away the overhang, I think you should proceed as usual by either installing formwork or applying the spray coating.

The reason we remove overhangs is that we remove any parts that look like they might collapse!

This applies to any job site, but please remove any sections that look like they might collapse or are in poor condition before proceeding with construction.

This is the same principle that applies to design as well: for boulders, you’d reinforce the base, and for slightly larger rocks (with deep embedment), you’d just split the surface a little, or

The golden rule is to remove hazardous materials from slopes first.

There are some designs where you might wonder, “Do we really leave this in?” but I think it’s safe to assume that, as a general rule, it should be removed.
