Where is the lath mesh used for sprayed mortar or sprayed concrete located?

To be honest, I've always felt there was a contradiction there, lol.

Or are you using spacers to raise it?

 

Well, while the spacer is meant to serve as a guide for the spray thickness, I seem to recall that in the past, its primary purpose was to keep the lath mesh centered.

And yet, the construction plan specifies that the wire mesh must be firmly attached to the natural ground and stretched so that it fits snugly.

This phrase sounds so familiar, but it’s actually kind of tricky, isn’t it? lol

The theory is that, since it’s drawn in the center of the blueprint without anyone noticing, the rebar mesh goes in the center.

 

From a macro perspective, in terms of strength, the surface would be stronger if it were as close as possible to a sprayed surface; however, since we aren’t seeking strength from the lath mesh, it’s unclear how this actually plays out.

Also, since the mesh adheres better to the mortar when it’s floating, it’s definitely better to have it positioned higher up for that reason as well.

 

However, it doesn't have to be there, and even if it happens to be underneath when you dig an access hole, that's not a problem either.

There is no literature or anything else that states it should be in the middle.

Besides, there aren't even any strength specifications, lol

I think it’s best to view the wire mesh simply as a means of improving the bond between the natural rock and the mortar.

Think of it simply as a way to ensure the mortar adheres firmly to the surface, like roots intertwining.
