The other day, I attended a safety conference at a certain company.

There was a discussion about communication there.

So, I’d like to share some of my thoughts and reflections.

Mehrabian's Law

A concept proposed in 1971 by Albert Mehrabian, a psychologist at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

The concept that a person's first impression is formed within the first 3 to 5 seconds of meeting them, and that most of that information is derived from "visual cues."

According to the concept proposed by Mehrabian, the percentage of a person’s overall impression formed upon first meeting is,

Visual information such as "appearance, facial expressions, gestures, and eye contact" totaled 55%,

Auditory information such as “voice quality, speaking speed, volume, and tone of voice,” 38%,

"Linguistic information such as the meaning of the words themselves and the content of the conversation" is 7%It is said that...

93%

This means that 93% of the message is conveyed through gestures, tone of voice, and intonation.

So that means there's almost no need to speak, right?

Human potential is truly amazing.

Gestures we commonly use on the job

Come to think of it, we slope workers also use gestures—hand and body movements—to communicate with our colleagues in the distance, don't we?

"Turn up the air, turn it down, bring the ingredients, if you let your guard down, it's over, should we grab a bite to eat?, let's mix one more batch, etc..."

Just like that, the work on-site moves forward without any conversation.

When there's just a little bit of conversation mixed in, it helps us understand each other better, doesn't it?

I guess that's what being a pro is all about, huh?

That's the essence of communication, isn't it?

The Most Important Thing First Thing in the Morning

First thing in the morning, take a moment to observe your colleagues’ faces, movements, and the way they speak to get a sense of who they are.

Does anything seem off?

Have you noticed any strange remarks or behavior?

If doing just this much can prevent an accident that day, then,

Let's start the morning by observing our teammates!

We already have the ability to sense something about our peers with a 93% probability!
