How to Make a Packer (Part 4)

Things are really bad in Nagoya, aren't they?

Since this is an area that doesn't usually get snow, it's causing major chaos.

That said, it feels like it happens every year these days, though...

I'm heading out to the countryside, so I'm driving on studless tires—they give me peace of mind, and I'm used to driving in the snow, after all.

It looks like it's really tough for people who aren't used to it.

It doesn't look like I'll be able to make it to the job site today.

So, we've decided to drill the hole on Sunday.

This week is when we really need to give it our all!

How to Make a Packer (Part 4)

Here's a shot of the tip of the packer I had forgotten about the other day.

After that, I ran to the warehouse, cut about 30 cm off a spare φ90 packer, and got it ready.

Length of the Packing Tip and Span Seal

Cut the packer to roughly the same width as the span seal (butyl rubber).

At this point, it's best to use plenty of Span Seal without skimping.

It's important to make sure you don't let the tip leak.

Put the Span Seal inside

Carefully place the span seal inside.

How to Install Span Seal Properly

Here's what it looks like when you open it.

It's best if it's on the longer side. If it's too short, it becomes harder to tighten.

Once you've put it inside, you'll need to cinch the elastic seal, but I think it's best to fold it neatly first.

There’s no particular rule about why I write “I think” at this point!

As long as there are no leaks in the end, it's fine, so it doesn't matter how you do it.

Tighten the tip of the packer

Place the span seal inside and fold the packer once.

Fold the creased part neatly, like an "M," and then...Track numbers, etc....to narrow it down.

In my case, I recommend using something called a hose clamp.

For items like this, if there are two or four steel wires, use a band that’s about 70–90 mm wide.

If there are only a few, a smaller one is fine.

You can usually find them at home improvement stores, but if you're going to buy one, I recommend the ones that cost 150 yen each.

These hose clamps are inexpensive—you can find them at home improvement stores for between 150 and 350 yen.

Zip ties are fine, but considering tensile strength, we recommend using steel ones.

With this hose clamp, you can tighten it quickly and securely with an impact wrench.

And if you tighten the zip tie securely over this, it’ll be even better.

Since it's made of metal, I'll wrap it tightly with wide vinyl tape just in case it gets caught on something.

This way, even if it tries to spread out, you can secure it firmly with vinyl tape, cable ties, and a hose clamp.

Please make sure to secure the tip extra tightly!

Track number really highlights the difference between those who can narrow it down effectively and those who can't.

That's why I use a hose clamp.

We want to prevent mistakes as much as possible.
