Designs that don't take construction into account cause headaches for contractors

Earlier this year, I went to a certain construction site to review and verify the design.

I was told that they would use a concrete bearing plate instead of a standard one.

That in itself isn't a problem.

The reason was that, due to the lack of soil bearing capacity, a large bearing plate was required.

 

But if you install that pressure plate on the slope, it’ll weigh about 12 metric tons, lol.

It's 12 metric tons on the slope. 12 metric tons on a 5-minute slope!

The procedure involved pouring the concrete into the slope, followed by drilling anchor holes and tensioning.

When this pressure-bearing plate is installed, due to the design angle, the bottom is about 30 cm and the top is about 60 cm.

If you think about it normally, that's how it would turn out, lol.

Or it shifts downward.

 

In designs like this, there are usually only about four or five D16×1000 rebar bars used as stop bars, lol.

There’s no way a load-bearing plate weighing 10 metric tons or more could be held in place by just a few D16 bolts, even with friction!

I think it'd be a bad idea to just hammer in reinforcement bars like crazy, lol.

 

Was he a rookie designer, or was this his first time designing a slope?

This design works quite well on a natural slope.

And on top of that, it's a pump shot! lol

 

It’s true that, from an economic standpoint, it makes perfect sense to use a concrete compression slab, but,

This design completely ignores construction considerations.

Well, I guess it’s inevitable to some extent, since the design process usually starts with deciding to use the “XX” method and then building everything around that.

 

It might not be impossible, but making design changes at this point would be difficult, and,

There is no doubt that the actual construction will be completely different from the construction plan devised by the design consultant.

When you think about it, it would be a huge help if design consultants would consult with us contractors to some extent.

I guess I can't just ask that outright because of confidentiality and all that, right?

So, if you're going to ask around, maybe try contacting contractors in other prefectures as far away as possible?

I think if there were a community like that, incidents like this would become less common in the future, don't you think?

You'd be surprised how many places you can actually ask contractors about this and that, lol.

If the labor shortage continues to worsen, forget about digital transformation in the construction industry—

It is highly likely that the work itself will become impossible to carry out.

 

It’s better for both of us to avoid rework by making the design and construction as efficient as possible, right?

Back in the day, things somehow always worked out, but lately I feel like there have been a lot of weird things happening.
