Have you ever heard of a midlife crisis? lol
A midlife crisis generally refers to the psychological changes and turmoil experienced by people in their 40s and 50s.
This seems to happen often during the middle of one's life, a time when people tend to reevaluate their sense of self, their accomplishments, and the path ahead.
For us civil engineers and slope engineers, crises like this are inevitable, and
It is said that, particularly in occupations involving a lot of physical labor or long working hours, physical decline and occupational stress can make this crisis even more severe.
Just hearing that makes it sound kind of scary, doesn't it? lol
Reasons Why Civil Engineers and Slope Engineers Experience a Midlife Crisis
- Physical decline:Construction work is physically demanding. As you get older, you may notice a decline in your muscle strength and stamina, which can lead to a lower self-esteem and feelings of anxiety.
- Career Stagnation: When you’ve been working in the same industry for many years, it becomes hard to see how your career is progressing, and you start to wonder if you can grow any further or if there’s anything else you could be doing.
- Increased Family and Personal Responsibilities: This is also a time when family responsibilities increase and the financial burden of expenses such as children’s education and mortgage payments grows, leading to greater financial pressure.
- Changes in Occupations: The construction industry is undergoing rapid technological advancements and changes (such as digital transformation and CCUS), and traditional methods may no longer be effective. If you are unable to adapt to these changes, you may find yourself increasingly anxious about your future.

Strategies for us in the construction industry to cope with a midlife crisis include
- Physical Health Management: It is important to maintain your physical health through regular exercise and health checkups. It is also important to actively participate in workplace safety measures and training, and to take steps and remain mindful of protecting your own health.
- Improving Skills: Learning new technologies and management skills can broaden your career prospects. Earning certifications and participating in training to enhance your expertise can be the key to regaining your confidence in your work.
- Reevaluating Your Career: A midlife crisis is a good opportunity to reassess your career. You can find new motivation by taking on a new role or, in some cases, considering a career change to a related industry.
- Mental Health Care: If you're feeling stressed or anxious, it's a good idea to seek professional counseling (though talking to your spouse or significant other is also fine). Talking things through can help you sort out your problems and see them in a more positive light.
- Treasure the time spent with family and friends: Strengthening your bonds with family and friends can help you find meaning in life and a sense of security. Finding fulfillment outside of work makes it easier to lead a balanced life.

That's what I found out after reading all sorts of things online, lol.
While a midlife crisis is a temporary phenomenon that many people experience, you can minimize its impact and,
It is possible to turn this into a positive turning point.
By drawing on my experience as a slope engineer while taking on new challenges and working toward personal growth,
This should help you get through this difficult time.
By the way, I’m right in that age range—apparently, most people are between 45 and 55 or so, lol.
That's crazy, lol
It would be nice if I could just say that, but I guess I’ll just have to stay positive.
Since many of our employees are around the same age, I hope we can encourage each other as we move forward ^^
This old guy is going to give it his all! Let's all do our best, too!!
See you later.
