The above are examples of loading methods (measurement times) listed in guidelines and other documents related to ground anchor construction.

I imagine most of you are taking the exam more or less according to this outline.

 

I think it's fine to use this because it makes it easier to explain things to the government office.

However, there are actually quite a few people who are willing to wait 60 or 180 minutes.

No, that's actually fine, isn't it? That's what it says, after all.

At maximum load, the measurement can be completed in about 5 to 15 minutes with a reading of 0.5 mm or less.

This is just an example, but the part in question takes about 5 to 15 minutes.

 

In a real-world scenario, let's say, for example, that the maximum load duration is 60 minutes.

Let's assume that for the first 15 minutes, the load fluctuates and the dial gauge shows movement, so the conditions are not stable.

If it hasn't moved at all by around the 20-minute mark, you can conclude that continuing the measurement will not yield any changes.

Now, let's say you took a measurement at the 20-minute mark and then another at the 30-minute mark. As long as the result is 0.5 mm or less, it's acceptable.

This concludes the maximum test load.

I wonder why we have to wait for that so stubbornly.

There's a reason why the Anchor Association extended the holding period.

That's because it takes time to stabilize the creep.

If you do that, even the anchors that don't fall within the theoretical range will generally fall within it, right?

That concept is also covered on page 174 and following of the *Ground Anchor Construction: Design and Construction Manual*.

If you have a solid understanding of that, you might be able to save even more time.

This is an area where even our employees have slightly differing interpretations. (Maybe the association keeps it vague so they don't get called out on it?)

 

By the way, there's a note at the bottom of page 180 that says something along the lines of "It's okay as long as it doesn't go past that point."

It may sound extreme, but as long as the anchor doesn't come loose, it's still working!!
