Construction Sequence When a Landslide Begins | Why Drainage Is the Top Priority

Crack

A crack has appeared in the mountain we're currently working on.

 

The anchors are installed using a formwork frame at the top and a zabuton frame plus a steel pressure plate at the bottom.

The site itself was damaged by heavy rain and is currently undergoing restoration, and

A design that involves shaping the slope to a certain extent and then installing the retaining wall and anchors directly on top of the slope cone.

Cliff-slope deposits

A "cliff cone" (gaisui) refers to the portion shown in the photo above that has collapsed and accumulated at the bottom.

 

There are quite a few construction sites where this is installed exactly as is.

But in this case, since it’s a mountain with so much water, shouldn’t we handle the water first before doing any retaining wall or ground anchor work?

That's what I think.

What's more, there's a catch basin near the site, and it's absolutely packed with water—right up to the top!!

This means that the volume of water collected exceeds the volume of water discharged.

The surrounding mountains are absolutely full of water. And it had been sunny the whole time.

 

I think the first work done on this mountain was drainage.

Drain the water down to the natural ground level to relieve the internal pressure.

Next, ground anchors are installed, and after they are tensioned, the upper retaining wall is constructed.

Landslide

Take as many wide-angle photos as possible so that even if the site gets completely destroyed in the worst-case scenario, there won't be a problem (as evidence of how much work has been completed, etc.).

For now, let's focus on the tension in the ground anchors that have already been installed.

I'm not sure how much this will help, but if the problem persists, I'll need to drain the water first.

 

I'm hoping it doesn't rain heavily before then.

We really need to increase the drainage from the catch basin, but unfortunately that’s not part of the job scope lol.
