Scoria Mitigation | On-Site Construction with Volcanic Sediments

Today was incredibly tough—I left from Nagoya, went to Gotemba, then to Akiruno City, and came back via Nagano.

My butt really hurts, lol.

Well, I guess this is part of the job, so...

Scoria Appears!

At our job site, scoria is coming out of the drilled holes, and the structure just won't stand on its own!

This volcanic debris is often found around Gotemba in Shizuoka, and it's a real pain.

It's so crispy and light!

When you dig horizontally, all the scoria in that area slides down smoothly to its angle of repose.

Of course, if the surface is covered with sprayed mortar or similar material, an overhang will easily form.

 

Since it’s not easy to dig there either, I’m in a bit of a bind...

As for countermeasures, since permeability is high, I think it would be best to use chemical injection or grout injection—though there doesn’t seem to be much soil cover...

It seems the general contractor will decide that, so I won't butt in, lol.

Based on my experience, I have never excavated scoria before.

I've studied this before, but this is my first time seeing the actual thing.

But scoria with such an even mesh pattern really sells well!

Since the future course of the project will depend on the remedial measures chosen, I’m hoping for an approach that’s both cautious and bold!

If this works out, it’ll be a lesson I can draw on for future projects lol

Back in the day, we had to come up with all sorts of ingenious solutions when drilling into the pumice layers of the Shirasu Plateau in Kagoshima.

However, since we're using a slightly different construction method this time, that approach probably won't work.

Man, working on-site really teaches you a lot.

It would be great if we could share that kind of information here, as it would help improve construction efficiency and quality even further.
