Range of Cigarette Odor | The Distance at Which Smokers Affect Non-Smokers

Hello, everyone.

This is Enta.

If you work in the construction industry, there’s a pretty good chance you smoke, right?

I quit in my late 20s.

Smoking

To non-smokers, the smell of smokers is unbearable, so I drew a picture to show just how unbearable it is.

Diagram Showing the Effects of Smokers' Odors on Non-SmokersThat's it.

Strictly speaking,Personal OpinionThis isn't everything, but this is the general idea I have in mind.

This illustrates the range of cigarette smoke when someone is smoking.

It is said to be approximately 7.0 meters in calm conditions. (Manabu Sakuta, Neurologist at the Tokyo Brain and Nerve Center)

Under these circumstances, the smell of smokers typically affects nonsmokers.

Area Affected by Smoking

The diagram below shows the range of the odor emitted by a smoker when they are not smoking.

It seems that non-smokers can determine whether someone within this range is a smoker.

If you have a good sense of smell, it might be even farther away.

That means it gives off a smell this strong. This includes bad breath and odors on clothing, too.

Non-Smoking Zone

You often see smoking areas outside restaurants and other places, don't you?

This is the area affected by the smoke from that location.

Smoking area next to the store

If a smoking area is located within 7.0 meters of the store entrance, the store will smell like smoke even though smoking is prohibited inside.

The same applies to on-site offices: there’s no point in setting up a smoking area outside on the first floor of a two-story office building.

Considering the wind, I would like you to set up a smoking area at least 30 meters away.

Smoking on the Train

This is due to the smell of cigarettes inside the car while it is parked.

As expected, as long as the windows are open, the smell drifts out into the surrounding area.

I totally get that people at construction sites might think, “It’s okay because I’m smoking inside the car,” but please keep the windows closed if possible.

The Effects of Smoking While Driving

A car with someone smoking inside spreads the smell over an incredible distance while driving.

Please close the window before smoking.

There are a lot of smokers around me, too. Apparently, about 40% of people in the construction industry smoke. (That’s a significant decrease from the past.)

It stinks, sure, but when it comes to other people smoking, my personal preferences don't matter.

It's a smoker's right, so I won't say anything.

I just want you to understand that non-smokers don't want to smell it as much as possible.

We non-smokers try to get upwind as much as possible.

I want you to understand that.

Smokers, please stand downwind.

It is a non-smoker's right not to have to smell cigarette smoke.

I also hate it when my work clothes get that cigarette smell on them.

Smelly old men aren't exactly popular, right? The same goes for smelly older women and young women.

It's the same thing.

These days, people will criticize you just for smoking.

I don't mind if you exercise your rights. It's just that you should also respect the rights of others.

Please be mindful that there are other people in that space besides you when you smoke.

Since everyone is granted equal rights, let's be considerate of one another.

If the smoking rate in the construction industry goes down, I think more women will enter the field, and more young people will find jobs there.

I hope this will help improve the image of the construction industry, even just a little, and that people will continue to support the future of civil engineering.

See you later.

*Talking about how you pay more taxes than other people is missing the point, so it’s best not to bring it up lol.

By the way, someone I know was drinking the product listed below, and their breath didn't smell like cigarettes!

This really surprised me!! ()

That "old-age smell," too... Maybe I should go ahead and buy some soon...
