Weather Resistance of Polyethylene and Carbon Black | The Truth About 100-Year Durability

The truth about weather resistance—at last! lol

 

When they say, “It’s weather-resistant!”—

It has hardly been verified at all!

However,Cross-linked polyethyleneThe results of the weather resistance tests are now available.

I suppose the general understanding is that PE (polyethylene) equals outstanding weather resistance.

So, I looked into what kinds of materials are used for PE.

It seems that polyethylene is commonly used for water distribution pipes.

These are pipes for underground installation.

To cut to the chase,

ThisI've heard that polyethylene pipes last about 100 years.

However, since it is buried in this case, it is not exposed to ultraviolet rays.

Apparently, this carbon black acts as a UV absorber, and

It seems that carbon black is considered the best shielding agent.

 

I looked up various products online. I also looked through quite a few academic papers, but,

We only have data on the weather resistance of polyethylene-based materials.

I found some data showing that polyethylene has pretty good weather resistance.

While PVC pipes lose their impact resistance due to UV degradation,

There was also a paper from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism stating that polyethylene pipes remained unchanged.

 

In my personal opinion,

Polyethylene = Excellent weather resistance (I bet it'll last 20 years, lol)

Let's just go with that lol

    I think if we can present the client with specific figures, they'll be more likely to accept our proposal...

      Weather resistance is tricky, isn't it? lol
      Actually, it looks like it would be pretty easy to make a leveling mat, lol.
      Personally, I think it's pretty easy to do once you understand the structure.
      Other than that, if we just make sure to conduct the weather resistance tests (exposure tests) properly, as you said, it looks like we’ll be able to get NETIS approval, lol.

      I'm not sure if it can be done cheaply, but,
      It’s great when things come to life like this, through discussions among slope construction professionals—
      It's really fun, isn't it?
