The Current Situation in Hiroshima | The Heavy Rain Disaster in Western Japan

This is a submarine in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture!

It's just sitting right out there!

It's right next to the Yamato Museum.

 

There is an area along the route from Hiroshima City to Kure City where last year’s disaster occurred.

There were still many places scattered about that remained just as they were back then.

With the blue tarp still draped over it.

 

Looking at the shape of the mountains, I could see that the terrain was characterized by numerous very small valleys, which were scattered all over the highway.

It appears that debris flows originated from nearly all of the valleys in that area.

It appears to be quite a mess.

Currently, high-energy-resistant ring nets designed to prevent soil and rock erosion have been installed along the edge of the valley.

I think this is just a temporary measure for now.

Even if heavy rain were to cause a mudslide, it seems we could at least prevent large boulders from entering.

In the future, I suppose erosion control dams and the like will likely be built from the lower to the upper parts of each valley.

 

It was amazing how much slope work there was in Hiroshima. Almost none of it had been done yet.

After all, there’s such a shortage of contractors that we’re even getting requests for estimates from as far away as Aichi Prefecture!

I’d like to help as much as I can, but we’re short-staffed here, too.

It’s not easy, but I hope the slope construction companies in Hiroshima will do their best to ensure safe construction.

Next, here are some precautions to take the next time it rains heavily:

The next place that’s sure to collapse is the section that didn’t collapse this time!

There is nothing left in the area that collapsed this time that could slide (or collapse).

The blue tarp is there solely to protect the surface.

After all, if there's nothing to slip on, you can't slip, even if rainwater seeps in.

Please be extra careful when working in areas where you didn't slip last time.

It’s entirely possible that even a light rain could reduce adhesion and resistance.

It is highly likely that areas that did not collapse last time will collapse toward the areas that did collapse.

Please carefully observe and survey the slope before proceeding with construction.
