Field Notes on Ground Anchor Construction, Part 1 (Soil Cover)

The other day, the general contractor asked, “How much soil coverage around the anchors is considered a problem?”

I was asked that question.

As far as I remember, it was about 3 meters...

I thought that, so I looked it up, and it turned out to be 5 meters.

I've really been forgetting things a lot lately.

I thought I’d pretty much memorized the design and construction standards for ground anchors, but once I stop looking at them, I suddenly forget everything...

To begin with, what exactly is the soil cover for ground anchors?The distance from the top of the anchor’s embedment section to the surface of the natural ground when the anchor was installedThat's what it means.

I think it will be easier to understand if you look at the illustration.

ThisWe need a 5-meter-wide area covered with soil!

 

If the load falls below this level, the overburden pressure (overburden load) decreases, and in the worst-case scenario, this can cause the surrounding rock to become unstable or even collapse.

Please be very careful.

That said, while these factors are typically taken into account in standard designs, caution is required because, in some cases, excavation may be necessary at the top.
