I realized the other day while chatting on Twitter that I had forgotten to mention this, so I’d like to share it with you now.

There are all kinds of CAD products out there.

Manufacturers don't make their products very compatible with each other because they want people to use their own products, don't they?

There is software that can convert it with near-perfect accuracy, but there are some basics you need to know.

First of all,File extensionThat's it.

If you use AutoCAD, the filename should end with “.dwg.”

This ".dwg" is a file extension that indicates the file format or type.

The file extension that is generally compatible with any program is "DXF."

Any CAD software, regardless of the manufacturer, should be able to handle DXF files.

If you don't know what CAD software the other party uses and want to send them the file, you can just send it in DXF format, but if possible,Older versions of DXF filesIf you hand it to them this way, they'll likely be able to read it without any trouble.

Please be sure to remember the file extension.

You can tell right away whether you can read it or not.

Next, don't assume that any contractor can read your company's drawings.

It’s a big mistake to assume that just because you can open a file on your own system, you can open it on another company’s system—there are as many file extensions as there are CAD programs.

When sending files to other companies via email, it’s helpful to check for compatibility with their CAD software or to include at least three file formats—such as DXF, your company’s CAD format, and SXF (sfc, p21)—along with the main file.

If there are still parts you can't read, a PDF is your last resort, lol.

Well, I suppose companies that insist on PDFs even at this stage probably don't use CAD in the first place, so there's nothing we can do about it.

This software is excellent.

I'm a big fan of it, too. (Though lately I've been using it exclusively for AutoCAD, lol.)

It's really convenient because you can customize the message to suit the recipient before sending it.

Since there are fewer character encoding issues with text conversion these days than there used to be, let's use software like this to boost our productivity!
