I was talking with a consultant from a major firm I met the other day, and I thought, “Is there really a job like this!?”
I heard about this, so I wanted to share it with you all lol
Have you heard of environmental surveys or environmental impact assessments?
What Are Environmental Surveys and Environmental Impact Assessments?
When I looked it up online,
Purpose and Overview of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Purpose: To prevent environmental pollution, destruction of nature, and health hazards caused by large-scale projects, and to encourage the implementation of environmentally responsible projects.
Organizer: Businesses (including corporations, the national government, and local governments) that intend to implement the target projects.
Eligible Projects: Projects expected to have a significant impact on the environment, such as roads, railways, dams, airports, large-scale factories, and waste treatment facilities.
To put it simply,
We're building a dam.
What kind of impact will building a dam have on the environment? Which plants will disappear? What kinds of insects will be affected?
And so on—a job that involves investigating environmental impacts!
You'll be like, "Whoa..." lol
Back in the day, at large-scale dam construction sites, environmental groups would often make a big fuss, saying, “This insect! That animal!” and so on, but,
I just found out the other day that this was exactly what it was!
Personally, I thought, “That’s probably just a rough estimate, right?!” but it turns out they actually investigated it thoroughly lol.
How will the investigation be conducted?
This survey seems to be similar to a census and appears to be conducted every year.
Every year, along a 100-kilometer stretch of a Class 1 river, we collect samples at designated spots to analyze the abundance of insects and microorganisms, identify moss species, and so on—using microscopes and counting individual specimens.
So boring!!!!!!
That's what I think, but it's an amazing world, isn't it?
Apparently, there are many people who love insects and other creatures, and it seems they’re able to combine their hobby with their work.
Of course, there are also surveys conducted in urban areas—such as assessing the impact of construction noise and vibrations on the surrounding area when a building is being built.
It's easy to imagine this part, but counting bugs? LOL—I can't help but think that's just amazing!
This is definitely a job that people who hate bugs could never do.
Where is the order coming from?
Apparently, these are generally public works projects undertaken by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and other agencies.
Of course, there are probably private ones as well.
Since environmental conditions vary depending on the season in this 100-kilometer-scale ecosystem survey, it seems to be a year-round job.
Since it doesn't happen every day, it takes place at a set time and location, and naturally, it involves a bidding process.
And apparently, even in this niche field, there’s stiff competition, so it’s really tough!
I’ve heard all sorts of things about money, but you’ll have to ask me directly about that stuff lol. I guess I can’t really post that online, can I?

The world is full of jobs I've never even heard of!
In terms of qualifications for this survey, it falls under the environmental division of the Professional Engineer certification.
It's the perfect industry for people who like bugs or want to work in that kind of research field, isn't it?

I hear there are billions of jobs available each year.
An industry I'm not familiar with sounds like a lot of fun!
