Backfill Material Is Required Behind Concrete Load-Bearing Slabs | Construction Principles

Recently, during ground anchor installations, there have been many cases where a pressure plate is present but backfill has not been installed.

How are things at your workplace?

The ground is really shaky.

Even so, there aren't any "zabuton" slots, are there?

We made a design change the other day, and when I looked at the design documents, there was absolutely no mention of backfill material.

But the cut surface is rough, so I think it'll probably end up bumpy.

Despite that, there's no space for the zabuton. There's no design for the backing material!

Instead, there was a 15-centimeter layer of sprayed concrete.

 

Oh, are you planning to spray the concrete first, level the surface, and then place the load-bearing plate on top?

That's what I thought, but if that were the case, the sprayed concrete would probably crack all over the place once the tension subsided, right?

That's what I think.

What's more, you can't shape it with sprayed concrete!

 

The only conclusion I can draw is that the consulting firm doesn't know about this, but what's the reality here?? (Does it depend on the consultant in charge??)

I've seen about three of them so far this year.

Well, we can install it as a design change, but the government agency won’t be too happy about it, so it’ll be a bit of a gray area. Still, if it’s okay to make a curve without it, we’ll just go ahead and install it—so please just send us the instructions.

And since it's a concrete pressure plate this time, it's definitely going to crack lol

When installing a pressure-bearing plate, the one thing you must check is whether there is any backfill material.

Concrete load-bearing plates, in particular, take a fair amount of time to deliver, yet they crack quite easily. And once they crack, you start to worry about the construction schedule.

If the second one breaks, I'll want to cry lol (both financially and in terms of the schedule).

 

I want to say this to the consultant.

Concrete pressure plates are really prone to cracking (due to uneven loading), so backfill material is absolutely essential.

It would be fine if the subgrade consisted of soil or clay, but if it’s gravel, it will almost certainly crack. (Uneven pressure)

So please be sure to check the backfill material in the design.

That way, it reduces the hassle of making design changes on-site and lowers the risk of breakage.

As a contractor, I just want to do a good job.

Please definitely consider it lol
