Galvanized Cable Ties Are the Safe Choice | Choosing Materials

The other day, I was doing a cost estimate for a city that had requested it.

The design is so unusual that I had to ask the government official in charge, “Are you sure this is right?”

I ended up checking that.

It made me think, “Wow, they still come up with designs like this these days.”

I can't go into details since the bidding hasn't started yet, but I'll let the people I meet know, lol.


But that's beside the point.

I heard this from someone the other day.

Apparently, there was a binding wire protruding from the legal framework, and that was pointed out during the inspection, resulting in an order to tear it down!

That’s what you’d think, right!?

It seems that, in the end, it was spared from demolition, but it apparently caused quite a stir.

It has been pointed out that the tie rods will eventually rust and affect the structural frame.

So, what's the reality?

So, I did some research on various things.

 

There really isn't any literature on tie wires in reinforced concrete structures, is there? lol

I’m sharing this because it was briefly mentioned in the Construction section of the General Specifications for Concrete. (This isn’t about strength or anything like that.)General Specifications for Concrete: Construction Edition

Red Line 1: It is standard practice to tie the intersections of reinforcing bars with annealed steel wire that is at least 0.8 mm in diameter.

Red Line 2: It is important to ensure that there are no harmful effects.

That's all it says.

If interpreted (or twisted?) very broadly, this ensures that the binding wire does not cause any harmful effects.

If the government interprets it that way, I'll just be like, "Ugh."

However, it is usually the formwork for the legal frame where tie wires are visible.

Since the strength of formwork depends on the formwork itself... the tie wire is unlikely to have a negative effect...

Hmm... I kind of feel like it's a bit weak.

When people say that the formwork is attached to the main reinforcing bars via the hoop reinforcement...

The hoop reinforcement is galvanized, so...

It's starting to feel like a back-and-forth argument.

 

While I was looking through various sources and online books, I came across a similar Q&A.

When you see opinions like this, you can’t help but think, “That makes sense,” right?

 

Galvanized cable ties might be the best choice.

If there’s even the slightest bit of rust, it’s safer to just say, “It’s galvanized, so it’s fine!”

I wasn't able to come up with a complete answer, but,The safe choice is galvanized bindingThat's it.

And, of course, try as much as possible not to let the binding wire extend beyond the legal limits.

You might be thinking, “That’s ridiculous!” but,

Like thatThere are inspectors who make silly remarks.That is also true.

An amateur who knows nothing about construction or management, yet an inspector who, after working at a government office for many years, has come to believe he has a superficial understanding of both construction and management.
