I often hear people say, “Haven’t the technical skills of design consultants been declining lately?”
I often see general contractors saying, “What the hell kind of design is this?!”
But, surprisingly, my take on it is, “Well, I guess that’s about right,” lol.
However, with the introduction of ICT, there are some design consultants who don’t fully understand it themselves, and I get the feeling that we haven’t been able to coordinate things very well in that regard.
And with this three-way standoff between government officials who don’t have a clue about ICT or on-site operations, the general contractor, and the construction consultant, all sorts of problems are popping up, lol.
Even when the general contractor checks with the government office, the office passes the question on to the consultant, and the consultant just says, “That’s a matter for the site,” and passes it back.
The government office was at a loss, so they consulted their supervisor, but the supervisor didn't know either, so they turned to a higher-level public technical center of sorts.
But there, they ended up talking about old-school techniques, and I came home with an even more complicated situation on my hands lol
What do you think? Is this happening in your area, too?? lol
That said, I don't actually think that's the case.
Design and construction are separate
This has always been the way things are.
I want the designers to be as bold as they can in their designs!
Of course, while taking into account economic comparisons, past performance of construction methods, and the current conditions on-site!!
Just go ahead and design it however you like.
And we, as contractors, figure out how to make it happen!
If it doesn't work, we can just change the design, lol.
There has to be a valid reason for why something can't be done, but I guess that's just the way it is.
Designers are in the business of imagining 1 from 0.
A contractor's job is to carry out (implement) Plan 1.
When that happens, the client ends up being left out of the loop, which is kind of surprising—but hey, they are the client, after all~ lol (They’re the ones with the money, right? ^^)
We may seem separate, but we're two sides of the same coin.
Every now and then, we both call each other "you idiot," but I guess that's just how the world works, lol.
