Removing Bolts Without Damaging Them as Much as Possible | Maintenance Techniques

Well, there's no point in being jealous of others, so let's focus on the things we can control.


But that's beside the point.

In this post, I’ll explain how to restore a screw thread (how to remove a bolt cleanly).

I’m sure many of you already know this, but I’ll write it down for those who don’t.

 

It happens all the time that bolts and nuts are hard to loosen, or that bolts just won't go in, right?

In cases like that, the nut and bolt are seized together.

In cases where rust or debris has gotten into the gap between the bolt and nut, or where they have become welded together due to thermal expansion,Gajiruis what they say.

 

If you try to force it off or force the bolt in at a time like this, you’ll strip the threads and compromise the functionality of the bolt and nut.

Here's a little tip to help you avoid that.

Please be especially careful with small bolts and nuts.

If you try to force it to turn just because it's stiff, in the worst-case scenario, you'll strip all the threads! lol (Especially on the machine side, that would be a total disaster.)

 

First, here's how to remove it.

Once the bolt is loose enough to move, apply lubricant (a penetrating type is best) and repeat the process of loosening and tightening it.

I forgot to add music to the video, so it ended up sounding really gloomy lol

Follow the steps shown here to remove it.

(Though I am actually using bolts in the video, lol)

 

After removing the bolt, use a tap to cleanly re-cut the thread.

This cleans the screw threads.

Even if part of it has crumbled, you can still restore it to a certain extent.

 

However, if the thread has been worn down to the point where there’s nothing else we can do, we’ll weld it and retap it.

Since I'm just removing it this time, I'll insert it in a circular motion while applying lubricant.

If you do this in moderation, it will generally remove the rust from the threads and make them look clean.

There are three types of taps: No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 (roughing tap, semi-finishing tap, and finishing tap).

If you just want to clean it, using No. 3 alone is fine.

 

The next time you install a bolt, apply anti-seize compound or grease to it before tightening to prevent rust and seizing.
