Dealing with a Loose Anchor (Part 1) | Identifying the Cause

The other day, something a little troublesome happened on site!

I'm totally calm, lol.

That said, it’s not really the case, but this is something I wrote about the other day!

The anchor came loose, lol.

 

The adhesion failure occurred near the design load.

The mountain is composed of very poor-quality mudstone. Furthermore, since quite some time has passed since the design phase, it has weathered severely, and the planned anchorage points are slippery.

What's more, the water around the anchor was choppy.

In particular, the drilling for this loose anchor was so sticky that water was actually gushing out.

Mizumichi must have been there, too.

 

So, we immediately reported the matter to the general contractor, had them report it to the local government, and devised a plan for future action.

The general approach is the same regardless of which anchor you use, but this method involves adjusting the angle slightly to place the anchorage layer further back.

Re-installation of Ground Anchors

The yellow area in the figure above may indicate that the initial fixation length was unstable due to the first tension.

Compression loads, sudden unloading impacts, and the like.

Therefore, it must initially take hold at a point deeper than the deepest part of the anchor.

Reinstall the anchors after adjusting the angle slightly up or down. (The red line in the diagram indicates the planned location of the new anchors.)

 

However,Please verify the settling layer and perform the stability analysis again.

We need to calculate the safety factor when the angle is adjusted to move the anchor point further back.

Since this is, after all, a public works project, we need a basis for it. (From the government’s perspective, too.)

 

Some general contractors tell us to remove the PC strands and install them in the same location, but that’s quite a challenge.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but without a large backhoe or similar equipment, it would be virtually impossible. (Depending on the situation.)

With tie-back anchors like SEEE, the part that’s attached to the building—the tip—will definitely remain in place. (It practically never comes out.)

There will also be other polymer-based materials remaining, which will make drilling difficult.

It might be better to state categorically that it won't come out.

And,It's safer to hit the ball from a different angleThat's it.

 

I figure if the anchor comes out, I can just do it over. (We’re happy to redo our own work! We’ve even done other companies’ work, though lol.)

Therefore, once all construction work is complete, we will settle the payment with the general contractor.

Many general contractors are willing to talk once they understand the background of the situation.

So far, there have only been two companies that didn't pay us for rework (though they are major firms, lol).
