How to Distinguish Between mm, cm, and m in Japanese Construction

In civil engineering projects in Japan, the units commonly used are ㎜ (millimeters), ㎝ (centimeters), and m (meters).

Unit

The choice of unit depends on the situation and the distance being measured. For long distances, the unit “m” is used; for medium distances, “cm” is used; and for small objects, “mm” is used.

Tape Measure

“A ”tape measure“ (makijaku) is a measuring tool, similar to a roll-up measuring tape, used to measure long distances. When using it, the unit of measurement is typically ”m.”.

If you use "mm" or "cm" when wearing a makijaku, it could lead to errors or confusion.

In our work in the field of slope construction (norimen kōji), when measuring the area, we use a measuring tape, and the unit of measurement is “m.”.

For example, if the length is 10.53 m, then in centimeters it is 1053 cm, and in millimeters it is 10530 mm.

The larger the number, the harder it is to read or understand. If it’s more than 10 m, it becomes 10,000 mm—that’s hard to grasp, isn’t it?

Therefore, for measuring long distances, it is best to use “m.”.

Convex

Convex Rule (Convex)

“The ”convex rule,” also known as a roll-up tape measure, is used to measure distances of less than 6 meters.

In this situation, many people use “m” or “cm” as their unit of measurement, depending on their habits. Of course, this tool can also measure in mm.

You can use whichever units you find easiest to understand, but it would be better if you could understand and convert all units quickly.

For the “vernier caliper,” the unit “mm” is almost always used. It is very rare for people to use the unit “m” when using this tool.

When measuring small objects, the unit “mm” is easier to understand and more accurate.
