I don't think the average person would have the slightest idea what this is, but it's a machine used in machining called a lathe.

It's quite old.

But I bought one this time!

Even if an item is used, if its provenance is clearly known and the previous owner can provide a detailed explanation, it commands a high price.

This machine is 40 years old, too!

However, even so, it’s very well maintained and capable of achieving accuracy down to 1/100!

That said, it’s not like I can do it right away, lol.

This machine, called a lathe, can be used to cut threads, among other things.

Clamp an iron rod in a vise and spin it at high speed.

Slowly press the blade—called a "bite"—against the rod to cut it.

You can build up the worn areas on the shaft of this blower blade with weld filler and then cut them cleanly with a cutting tool!

Sure, there are times when it's cheaper to buy it, but,

The skill that is currently being lost is repair.

We've reached an era where there are no longer any repairmen.

Just last month, another LEGEND passed away.

Replacing the assembly when upgrading has been the standard practice up until now.

I don't think that will change in the future.

However, repair skills are definitely necessary.

Japanese machinery is truly amazing—even models that are no longer in production are still in active use today.

To ensure that this tradition continues, we’d like to incorporate these kinds of techniques into our work as well.

I'm actually a complete novice, so I'm going to have a pro from my neighborhood come over to teach me! (There will be a fee, lol.)

I’ve heard that once I learn how to use a lathe, I’ll be able to use a milling machine too, so I’m going to practice using the lathe for a while.

I hear it's super hard, but I'm going to give it a try!

Looks like we might be setting up a machining department soon, lol.
