I'm continuing to write about the cliff incident from the other day for a general audience.

Don't you ever wonder what soil is all about!?

It makes you wonder, doesn't it!

I think we professionals and civil engineers generally have a pretty good idea of what's going on, lol.

Because I'm always messing around with dirt.

 

So, what exactly is soil...? According to the book...

A mixture of soil particles (solid) + water (liquid) + air (gas)

This is soil.

And that “most dangerous saturated state” that came up the other day is, in fact,

Soil particles (solid) + water (liquid)

What?!

A state in which there is no air left is called a saturated state.That's what they say.

Conversely, if air is present, it is said to be in an unsaturated state.

This saturated condition is what causes surface slippage.

On the cliffSoil particles (solid) + water (liquid)That's the only option, right?

So, the soil particles are carried along by the water and flung away, causing the cliff to collapse with a huge crash.

So, I think you can see that it’s important to drain the water to create an unsaturated condition.

The more I learn about cliffs, the scarier they become—but they’re also fascinating (or is that just us slope specialists?).
