If you notice any abnormalities in your home’s foundation or backfill, shouldn’t you drain the water first? (For the general public)

The other day, we carried out drainage work as part of a private construction project.

It's a luxury condominium that's about 20 years old, and,

Parts of the slope have bulged outward, and other parts have subsided.

As a countermeasure, I decided to go with draining the water—since it’s a method that can be done quietly, for now lol

Apparently, since it's a quiet residential neighborhood, they'd like us to keep the noise down lol

 

Well, if there’s any more displacement, we’ll need some other retaining structures, so…

First, let's drain the water.

And here are the results.

It seems that this amount of water would accumulate behind the stone wall every time it rained, unable to drain completely, and would gradually seep out.

And when it turns into a downpour...

 

This time, by efficiently draining the water from the back,

I believe we were able to significantly reduce the likelihood of a collapse.

If it rains more, the water will spread to the surrounding drainage channels, so I think it will be much more effective.

 

This amount of backfill is quite effective for a residential property.

I believe this alone will be enough to prevent buckling and bulging in L-shaped retaining walls.

Wouldn't there be no problem at all if you installed proper drainage deep into the foundation of the house?

That's what I've been thinking lately.

 

I sometimes get the chance to talk about this with architects, but so far, no one seems to relate to it lol.

After all, builders don’t really care about the condition of the ground 10 or 20 years down the road, do they!?

When I think about how public works projects are built with a 50-year lifespan in mind, it just makes me go, “Hmm…”
