Slope Design Is No Joke | The Importance of Rationale

Landslide

I went to Tokyo the other day.

The thing is, it looks like a site we worked on last year suffered a landslide due to the rain from Typhoon No. 19...

 

I was in charge of the design for a private construction project, and in my design, the entire structure used the rebar insertion method.

We had also planned to drain the water, but we cut that out as well,

At the client's request, rebar was installed in only half of the area (the lower part of the slope was covered with a vegetation mat).

So, this is the collapse of the section where rebar wasn't installed this time.

 

The client was really regretting it. (To be honest, I was relieved, lol.)

Well, if you designed it yourself and it collapsed in the rain...

So, since we want to take thorough measures this time, we're redesigning it.

Given how much it rained, there are some things we just can’t help, but this time I want to make sure the mountain is safe and not slippery.

 

The key to this solution is, as expected, water.

I want to control the water.

Drain the water while securing it with rebar insertion tools.

Well, it's common in our public works projects, but it's pretty much unknown in the private sector, lol (probably).

 

I believe that as long as we prevent the mountain from becoming saturated and relieve the pore water pressure, it won’t collapse, so we’ll use that method again this time.

Basically, our construction work involves the use of large machinery (or so the average person seems to think), so it’s expensive.

However, if you do the construction work properly, it’ll save you money in the long run, right?

 

By addressing issues early on, you avoid losing out on future profits.

Things like this are really important, aren't they?

 

I would like to create a design that meets the client's expectations.
