The other day, when I asked one of our interns, they knew what a cm was, but were confused about mm and m???
That's how it was.
I'm from Nepal.
When I checked with other Nepalese people, they said they do learn it in school, but it seems some people might not actually practice it...
Whaaaaat?!
Even though I thought that, there are plenty of Japanese people who say things like that, so I figured, “Well, I guess I’ll just teach them then.”
At that time, I was learning about length while using a caliper.
Now I don't know how to use a caliper!!!!!!!
Whaaaaaaat?!
And then I was like, "Oh, so that's where it starts, huh?" lol
So, let's look at how to distinguish between m, cm, and mm, and how to convert measurements.
How to Use Each Unit.
In civil engineering in Japan, the units mm, cm, and m are used.
Sometimes in millimeters, sometimes in centimeters, sometimes in meters.
How you use it depends on the time and situation, but
For long distances, we use meters; for relatively short distances, centimeters; and for measuring small objects, millimeters.
A tape measure is used to measure long distances, and the unit of measurement when using a tape measure is the meter.
If you use millimeters or centimeters at this point, you’re more likely to make a mistake.
When measuring the area during our slope construction work, we use a tape measure to take measurements in meters.
For example, let's say 10.53 m. That's 1,553 cm or 15,530 mm.
It gets a little harder to follow as the numbers increase, doesn't it?
If it's over 10 meters, that's 10,000 mm!! It's hard to wrap your head around!!
So, use "m" for longer distances.
Convex Rule (commonly known as "Convex") (also known as "Scale")
Use this when measuring distances of 6 meters or less.
At this point, many people use either meters or centimeters, depending on the person.
Of course, it can measure in millimeters, so some people refer to it in millimeters.
It’s fine to use units and expressions that are easy for you to understand, but it’s better if you can instantly convert units no matter what units are used.
When using calipers, measurements are almost always given in millimeters.
Almost no one here uses "m."
When measuring small objects, millimeters are easier to understand.
Please make sure to memorize this table.
For example, 1 cm is 0.01 m. 1 cm is 10 mm.
If you're not sure how to read the table, just look at it while referring to a ruler, and you'll understand right away.
And if you count the marks on the ruler one by one, I think you'll see what I mean ^^
Measuring things is extremely important.
This is an absolute must, especially in our civil engineering industry!
We need to accurately measure the sizes of various items.
