Hasn't this weird rain been really bad these past few days?

Nationwide! There have been a lot of earthquakes, too...

It was pouring rain, so I decided to take some photos lol

The volume of water in the Asukabu River during the latter half of this period was immense, and it continued to rise, eventually reaching about 80 percent of its maximum level.

This is a mountain range where it originally rained a lot and which has an abundance of water. (Suzuka Mountains)

And the water is so incredibly pure that it could even be sold as mineral water! (Water seeps slowly through the sand from the granite.)

 

And if you drive about five minutes from here, you can easily see the watershed.

That's where the river splits into the Mie Prefecture side and the Shiga Prefecture side, isn't it?

 

I believe that the challenge for us civil engineers is how to manage this water.

Landslides caused by heavy rain can also be visualized as the soil "exploding" under the weight of the water.

It doesn't slide along slowly. It hits with a thud in an instant.

Hold on until the very last moment, then go all out.

Disaster Prevention Construction

I want people to know that there are actually a lot of disasters that can be prevented simply by draining water from the mountains.

Lately, I’ve even started to wonder if, in most cases, just draining the water isn’t enough—rather than installing steel frames, anchors, or rock bolts, lol.

People might think, "Is this guy out of his mind for being a slope engineer?" lol

Well, it’s not very common to do construction work before a building collapses, though.

If anything, most of the work involves post-collapse remediation.

 

If they're really going to carry out remedial work, I'm wondering if it'll involve draining the water and installing retaining walls? (Drain the water to lighten the load, then secure it with retaining walls.)

Controlling the movement of water helps prevent disasters, doesn't it?

Stone Masonry

We’ve also been receiving an increasing number of requests for stone wall reinforcement recently.

Simply draining the water from the back is quite effective.

However, please be aware that ordinary stone masonry and stone walls are not very effective at stabilizing slopes.
