Or Is It About Making Memories? | The Rewards of Slope Stabilization Work I Discovered During Disaster Recovery Efforts for the Chuetsu Earthquake

Hello, everyone.

This is Enta.

I went to the Ogasawara Islands the other day to check out what's coming up.

"Ogasawara

It was a beautiful island, and it felt like I was visiting a Kagoshima island for the first time in a while lol.

But that's beside the point.

This time, I’d like to step away from technical topics for a bit and talk about life and work.

Is life just a grand way to pass the time, or is it about making memories?

"Life is one big way to pass the time."

Someone said something like that.

I don't know who said it.

What do you all think?

I believe that life isMaking MemoriesThat's what I think.

It’s only been in the last few years that I’ve come to think that way, though.

Don't you hate it when something you're doing just to pass the time ends up being such a struggle?

But when I think of it as just another memory, I end up thinking, “Well, I guess I’ll give it a shot,” lol.

Just that alone makes me feel a little differently.

The same goes for things that are a hassle.

Even things you’ve done for someone else become memories of “I did this much for this person.”

Of course, I wouldn't say it in a way that makes it sound like I'm doing you a favor.

I just keep it to myself.

"I did that for them, and this is what they said to me!"

This is a memory, too, and it'll make for a good story at our next drinking party, lol.

If I write something like this, I’m probably going to get criticized on social media for “dragging employees into the CEO’s personal memories,” lol.

But this is just a story I started, and the employees happen to appear in it.

On the other hand, I’m the only one who appears in the employees’ stories.

It's all about creating memories that are unique to each person.

A Strange Sense of Confidence That Sprang Up at the Chuetsu Earthquake Disaster Recovery Site

The more grueling the shoot was, the more it stays with me as a memory afterward.

For me, the hardest experience was at the site of the Chuetsu Earthquake.

According to data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, this earthquake occurred at 5:56 p.m. on October 23, 2004, with a magnitude of 6.8 and a maximum seismic intensity of 7.

According to an announcement by the Headquarters for the Promotion of Earthquake Research, 19 aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater occurred in the approximately two weeks following the mainshock.

It is believed that the prolonged rainfall prior to the earthquake, which had already softened the ground, contributed to the widespread damage caused by landslides and other disasters.

This disaster involved an overwhelming amount of work on slopes.

Back then, I had a string of days where I would start construction in the morning and go straight into the night shift.

Every time the right moment to take a photo came around at night, I'd wake up to take it, then take a quick nap again...

It was really tough.

But after getting through that situation, I started to feel this weird sense of confidence, lol.

It makes me think, “Compared to that, I’m sure I can handle this.”

It's a fond memory now.

After that, I started a company, hired some people, and a lot of things happened.

These are all good memories, too.

I imagine there are some people who are going through a tough time right now.

But if you can get past that, it will become a memory.

Challenging job sites and disaster recovery are precisely what make slope engineering so rewarding.

That's why I've always liked working on projects that other people don't want to take on.

Job sites that supervisors don't want to visit, job sites where the previous contractor bailed (walked away midway), and job sites where design and construction are happening simultaneously.

The harder it is, the more I want to do it, lol.

I want to take action and blaze a trail.

Our work is in infrastructure.

If a landslide occurs on a slope due to an earthquake or heavy rain, the road will be blocked, and daily life beyond that point will come to a standstill.

That's why, when a disaster strikes, I want to be the first one on the scene.

If you're in trouble, I'd love to come right over!

We'll think things through on the spot, hold meetings with the professionals from each company who have gathered, and move forward step by step.

We bring ideas to life on-site through creativity and ingenuity.

It helps people, it's tough, it's exhausting, and yet it's fun.

I don't think there's any other job like this.

This is especially true for civil engineering, as it is at the forefront of infrastructure development.

Although I’m just a part of that—a slope maintenance worker—I still think it’s the best job there is.

To create memories for a lifetimeSlope Stabilization Work...I don't think it's bad, though~ lol

If job opportunities in Japan become scarce in the future, I might start looking at opportunities abroad.

I wrote about a business trip I took to Africa a while back on my blog, but working on-site overseas is really interesting, too.

Well, I guess there are some people who don't want to go, though lol

"Slope

Let’s think of this as a memory and give it our all in our current jobs!

When you achieve something, that, too, becomes a memory.

"Plus-Minus Zero" is also a memory.

But please don't go into the red, lol.

Memories of operating at a loss are the hardest on me, the CEO, lol.

See you later.

It’s precisely because we’re always living with the baggage of our past that the more baggage we carry, the richer our experiences are!
