The more Japanese you\u2019ve studied, the more natural it is to think it means \u201cfun\u201d (\u697d).<br \/>\nIf someone yells \"Easy!\" when things are getting dangerous, that's definitely going to throw you off, lol.<\/p>\n<p>But that's beside the point.<\/p>\n<p>Previously,<a href=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/en\/trainee-method-1-cleaning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Construction Methods for Technical Intern Trainees<\/a>I wrote four books in that series. They are work manuals with translations included, intended to be read by the trainees themselves.<\/p>\n<p>This time, it's the other side of the story.<strong>How foremen and site supervisors\u2014as the instructors\u2014should explain slope construction work to foreign workers<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>As with the earlier discussion about \u201craku,\u201d I believe that the reason foreign workers often don\u2019t understand is more often due to the instructor\u2019s assumption that they\u2019ve \u201calready explained it\u201d than to any shortcoming on the workers\u2019 part.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I\u2019m not in a position to speak with any authority on this myself, but I\u2019ll go over it anyway.<\/p>\n<h2>\"Thinking You've Taught It\" Is the Most Dangerous | Essential Rules of Education to Keep in Mind<\/h2>\n<p>First, let\u2019s clarify what is required of companies when it comes to safety training for foreign workers.<\/p>\n<p>This isn't just a hunch; it's clearly stated in official documents, such as those regarding the supervision of interns.<\/p>\n<h3>What is required is to teach in a way that students can understand.<\/h3>\n<p>The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's<strong>\"Guidelines for Employers on Appropriate Measures to Improve the Management of Foreign Workers\"<\/strong>The following three points are listed regarding the assurance of safety and health:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Health and safety training may be conducted using participants\u2019 native languages, audiovisual materials, and other methods,<strong>A method by which the foreign worker in question can understand the content<\/strong>To be done by<\/li>\n<li>To ensure that employees understand the instructions and guidelines for preventing workplace accidents,<strong>Essential Japanese Phrases and Basic Signals, etc.<\/strong>Make an effort to ensure that students master [...].<\/li>\n<li>Signs, notices, and other materials related to the prevention of workplace accidents are,<strong>Methods such as diagrams<\/strong>Make an effort to do so using methods that are easy to understand, such as [...].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The key point is not that \u201ctraining was conducted,\u201d but rather,<strong>\"In a way that's easy to understand\"<\/strong>That's where it says that.<\/p>\n<p>He gave a one-hour lecture entirely in Japanese, and at the end, he asked, \u201cDo you understand?\u201d and everyone replied, \u201cYes!\u201d\u2014and that was it.<\/p>\n<p>So, while this is being implemented, it does not yet meet the requirements set forth in the guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>To begin with, occupational safety and health training upon hiring is required by the Occupational Safety and Health Act for all employees, regardless of nationality.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that there are more special educational programs just because someone is a foreigner, but rather,<strong>We need to deliver the same education in a way that more where it is difficult to install a work platform, while the worker is secured by said lifting equipment,\u201d and,<strong>Excludes work on slopes with a gradient of less than 40 harnesses for absolutely everything.<\/p>\n<p>At general contractor job sites, the general contractor\u2019s safety standards take precedence over the law, so...<\/p>\n<p>When assigning workers to perform rope access work at heights, as stipulated in the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations,<strong>Special Education<\/strong>is required.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the main rope and of Communication | Consistency Between Simple Japanese and \"Words to Avoid\"<\/h2>\n<p>What matters is how you convey it.<\/p>\n<p>Published by the Immigration Services Agency and the Agency for Cultural Affairs<strong>\u300c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moj.go.jp\/isa\/support\/portal\/plainjapanese_guideline.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guidelines for Easy-to-Understand Japanese to Support Residents<\/a>\u300d<\/strong>That's what it says.<\/p>\n<p>It's really easy to understand!<\/p>\n<h3>The Scissors Rule | Keep it short, clear, and go all the way Rocks may fall.<\/td>\n<td>Unless you finish what you're saying, it's impossible to tell whether you're saying yes or no.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>It's not like you have to do it, but...<\/td>\n<td>You don't have to do that.<\/td>\n<td>Double negatives are often interpreted the opposite way<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Keep an eye on the back.<\/td>\n<td>Look at the very bottom of the slope (the foot of the slope).<\/td>\n<td>Technical terms: Provide a paraphrase and include the original term<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Technical terms like \u201cnorijiri\u201d in the last line are,<strong>Don't just rephrase it and call it a day<\/strong>That's the trick.<\/p>\n<p>Since Japanese people on-site are bound to use terms like \u201choshiri\u201d and \u201choshata\u201d when talking to each other anyway, if you don\u2019t learn both the alternative terms and the original terminology together, you\u2019ll end up not being able to communicate effectively.<\/p>\n<h3>Instead of asking, \u201cDo you understand?\u201d use repetition and demonstration to confirm understanding.<\/h3>\n<p>The biggest mistake I tend to make on-site is ending my explanation with, \u201cGot it?\u201d I seriously do this all the time!<\/p>\n<p>The person being asked first replies, \"Yes.\"<\/p>\n<p>Some people think they\u2019ll get scolded if they say they don\u2019t understand, and sometimes they don\u2019t even know what exactly they don\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n<p>It's way more likely that \"Hi\" is being used to mean \"I heard you\" rather than \"I understand\" lol<\/p>\n<p>To confirm your understanding<strong>Repeat what the other person says<\/strong>\u3001<strong>Repeat to confirm your understanding<\/strong>Methods like these are effective.<\/p>\n<p>If you're doing this on-site, the following two-step approach is the most reliable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Have them repeat it<\/strong>\"Please tell me what you're going to do now,\" and have the person describe the task in their own words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Let me see you do it<\/strong>: For tasks such as tying a mooring knot, replacing the rope clip, and driving in the main anchor pin, have the worker perform them in front of the foreman the first time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We use repetition to ensure understanding of the words and demonstrations to confirm physical understanding.<\/p>\n<p>It takes time, but it might actually be cheaper than having to redo the work or dealing with accidents.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-67132\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/acac4549f599870feb4e0fe47cff3806.jpg\" alt=\"Learning Spray-Applied Formwork Techniques at the Construction Site Office\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The \"stop word\" and signal should be agreed upon as a single set on-site.<\/h3>\n<p>The guidelines state, \u201cEfforts should be made to ensure that students learn basic signals and other relevant information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The most important signal on a slope is,<strong>\"Stop\" and \"Falling Rocks\"<\/strong>I think that's extremely important.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that these two expressions are used differently depending on the person. \u201cStop!\u201d \u201cWait!\u201d \u201cHey!\u201d \u201cOi!\u201d\u2014they\u2019re all used to mean the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>Just like the word \u201cRaku!\u201d at the beginning, while Japanese people might understand each other based on context, it sounds like a completely different word to foreign workers.<\/p>\n<p>So, my recommendation is to establish the following guidelines for each worksite.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Decide on just one word to use when stopping (e.g., \"Stop\").<\/li>\n<li>Decide on a single signal for rockfall (e.g., \u201cRock!\u201d). Teach both the meaning of the signal and the actions to take when you hear it (look up, run to the side) as a set.<\/li>\n<li>Decide on hand signals to use when your voice can\u2019t be heard (e.g., crossing both arms widely)<\/li>\n<li>During the orientation for new attendees, everyone practices speaking out loud together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Especially on slopes where sound doesn't travel well vertically,<strong>The cue isn't just \"knowing\" it\u2014it's at the level where your body reacts instinctively.<\/strong>You need to practice until then.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-67131\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/2fd386f88e47f4eb4d534b16026c47cc.jpg\" alt=\"Learning About Rockfalls and Stop Signals During the Morning Assembly\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Teach Work Processes by Starting with \u201cWhy\u201d | Cleaning, Lath Installation, Formwork, and Spray Application<\/h2>\n<p>What I think is important is,<strong>Before explaining the steps, explain in a single sentence \u201cWhy we\u2019re doing this.\u201d<\/strong>That.<\/p>\n<p>If you understand the reasoning behind something, you can make the right decision even in situations not covered in the manual. On the other hand, people who have only memorized the procedures will get stuck as soon as the conditions change even slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Below is an example that explains the typical steps involved in slope protection work based on three key points: \u201cthe purpose,\u201d \u201cthe most hazardous areas,\u201d and \u201cwhat is checked during inspections.\u201d<\/p>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Process<\/th>\n<th>What is it for? So, rather than saying \"they don't go down,\"<strong>\"Do not enter the area below a person who is working.\" \"When standing side by side, maintain the spacing specified by the foreman.\"<\/strong>So, it's safer to give a range.<\/p>\n<p>And \u201cWhy do we clean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If loose soil or grass remains, the impurities (organic matter) in them will be harmful to the mortar applied on top and will prevent it from bonding properly to the slope.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cutting corners on cleaning could come back to haunt you in a few years in the form of peeling spray paint.<\/strong>.
