The slope in August is scorching hot first thing in the morning, so our work uniforms with built-in fans are working overtime.<\/p>\n

It's that time of year when the battery runs out before my body does, lol.<\/p>\n

I'm seriously gonna die lol<\/p>\n

But that's beside the point.<\/p>\n

This time, I\u2019m not going to talk about technical matters, but rather about the \u201cdifferences in aesthetic sensibilities\u201d that I encounter every time I work on slope stabilization projects with foreign technical trainees.<\/p>\n

I think anyone in the construction industry who works with trainees from Nepal or Vietnam will probably nod in deep agreement with this ^^<\/p>\n

The drainage pipe is not \"clear\"<\/h2>\n

This happened the other day while I was working on a slope construction project with some interns.<\/p>\n

We had the drain pipes installed based on instructions such as \u201cone per 3 square meters.\u201d<\/p>\n

And yet, it is actually stuck in there.<\/p>\n

The numbers are correct, too.<\/p>\n

But when you glance at it, the PVC pipes aren't lined up in a straight line.<\/p>\n

We Japanese can\u2019t help but say, \u201cWhy is it like this?\u201d the moment we see that, can we?<\/p>\n

But from the trainee\u2019s perspective, it\u2019s like, \u201cNo, no\u2014it\u2019s going in exactly as you said it would.\u201d<\/p>\n

The same applies, for example, if you give the instruction, \u201cInstall them every meter.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is 1 meter long.<\/p>\n

But the heights are all over the place, so it's just bumpy.<\/p>\n

And the person themselves can't even see those bumps and dents, can they?<\/p>\n

This is about the \"path\" along the slope.<\/p>\n

The difference in perception between \u201cbooks are placed there\u201d and \u201cbooks are scattered about\u201d<\/h2>\n

To explain this difference in sensation in simple terms, let's use the example of a book on a desk.<\/p>\n

If there were a pile of books scattered haphazardly, I think any Japanese person would notice and think, \u201cThat\u2019s a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n

To the interns, that seems perfectly normal.<\/p>\n

When I say \u201cordinary,\u201d what I mean is the feeling that \u201cthere\u2019s a book there.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Japanese people notice that the books are \"scattered about,\" they see only the fact that \"there are books there.\"<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why, even in civil engineering construction, it\u2019s easy to fall into the mindset of \u201cas long as it\u2019s there, that\u2019s good enough\u201d or \u201cit\u2019s fine as long as it exists.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you look at it purely in terms of functionality, the water drains out, and you can read books.<\/p>\n

In a way, it\u2019s actually very logical.<\/p>\n

However, in the Japanese workplace, appearance is considered just as important as quality.<\/p>\n

After all, if the work looks sloppy, that alone will lead people to judge it as a \u201csite that isn\u2019t being properly managed.\u201d<\/p>\n

This part is really hard to explain.<\/p>\n

I decided to investigate why our perceptions differ so much.<\/h2>\n

I did some research to find out why there is such a big difference between Japanese people and trainees.<\/p>\n

As I\u2019ve been doing some research on various topics, I\u2019ve frequently come across the concepts of \u201chigh-context cultures\u201d and \u201clow-context cultures,\u201d as proposed by cultural anthropologist Edward T. Hall.<\/p>\n

Japan is considered one of the world\u2019s most representative high-context cultures\u2014that is, a cultural sphere based on the expectation that people will \u201cread the situation and act accordingly without being told.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phrases like \u201calign the edges,\u201d \u201cmatch the surfaces,\u201d and \u201cinsert it straight\u201d\u2014aren\u2019t those unspoken understandings that Japanese people get without even having to say them?<\/p>\n

However, it seems that this expectation of \u201creading between the lines\u201d doesn\u2019t work at all with people who don\u2019t share the same cultural assumptions.<\/p>\n

In fact, according to materials from various companies and supervising organizations regarding the acceptance of technical interns, misunderstandings caused by language barriers and cultural differences are cited as major challenges in the workplace.<\/p>\n

In other words, the fact that \u201cno matter how many times we say it, they just don\u2019t get it\u201d seems to stem largely from our own tendency to rely too heavily on unspoken assumptions, rather than from any lack of ability on the part of the trainees.<\/p>\n

That really hits close to home, lol.<\/p>\n

I can't even count how many times I've said, \"You can just tell by looking, can't you?\"...<\/p>\n

It's hard because you can't tell just by looking, isn't it?<\/p>\n

Even so, there are still kids who move in a way that seems \"typically Japanese.\"<\/h2>\n

That said, it\u2019s not all doom and gloom.<\/p>\n

Every now and then, a girl with great taste pops up.<\/p>\n

To be honest, I don't know if this is just my natural inclination or if it's something I've picked up through habit.<\/p>\n

However, every now and then, a child appears who exhibits \u201ctypically Japanese behavior\u201d\u2014that is, being mindful of the street or the neighborhood on their own initiative.<\/p>\n

In that case, that student teaches the other interns in their native language, which is a huge help.<\/p>\n

From our perspective, the key will be how we raise this child.<\/p>\n

Speaking from my own experience on the job, I\u2019d say we should ditch abstract terms like \u201cneatly\u201d and \u201cproperly,\u201d and instead,<\/p>\n

I feel that the best way to convey visual standards\u2014such as \u201calign it along the string\u201d or \u201ctrim it to a height of 30 centimeters above the ground\u201d\u2014is to use numbers and tools.<\/p>\n

This is just my personal impression from the field, but I think it\u2019s about translating that intuition into a form that can be measured, rather than simply teaching it.<\/p>\n

All things considered, if we look solely at functionality, their approach might actually be the more rational one.<\/p>\n

However, in the Japanese construction industry, appearance is considered part of quality.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure there are many people on the front lines who are at their wits\u2019 end because no matter how many times they say it, nothing changes\u2014no matter how many times they say it, the same thing happens over and over again.<\/p>\n

Even here, the bosses are always scratching their heads over this, lol.<\/p>\n

That said, trying to get someone who doesn\u2019t \u201cpick up on cues\u201d to understand what you mean is also a problem with how you\u2019re communicating.<\/p>\n

Translating tacit understandings into numbers and tools.<\/p>\n

It may seem unassuming, but I\u2019ve learned once again that this is how we\u2019ll manage to survive alongside foreigners lol<\/p>\n

Let's create something tangible that's easy to understand, even without putting it into words!<\/p>\n
