To cut to the chase, they're pretty much the same thing lol.<\/h3>\n<p>To get straight to the point, in the world of slope engineering,<strong>Rock bolting and rebar insertion are essentially the same construction methods<\/strong>That's it.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people search for it thinking it\u2019s something different, but to be honest, what we\u2019re actually using on site is the same thing. (This is common knowledge among industry insiders, right?)<\/p>\n<p>According to a document from the General Incorporated Association for Slope Disaster Prevention Technology, rebar insertion work is also referred to in the literature by names such as \u201crock bolting,\u201d \u201ccut slope reinforcement,\u201d and \u201cnatural ground reinforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, there are simply four or five different names for what is essentially the same type of construction method.<\/p>\n<p>Even on our drawings, even though the title says \u201cReinforcement Bar Installation,\u201d I usually just tell the workers, \u201cThis is a rock bolt, you know,\u201d lol.<\/p>\n<p>On the job, nicknames are practically nonexistent.<\/p>\n<h3>Why the Names Differ | It's Simply a Matter of Which Standards Are Followed<\/h3>\n<p>\"So why are there so many different names for it?\" you might ask, but this is<strong>Because the applicable standards are different<\/strong>It seems like that.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Slope Association, it appears that they are generally handling the situation as follows.<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbRock bolt installation \u2192 Japan Road Association, \u201cHandbook on Rockfall Countermeasures\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbCut Slope Reinforcement \u2192 NEXCO \u201cDesign and Construction Guidelines for Cut Slope Reinforcement Methods\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbNatural Ground Reinforcement \u2192 Japan Road Association, \u201cGuidelines for Road Earthworks: Cut Works and Slope Stabilization\u201d; Japanese Geotechnical Society, \u201cManual for the Design and Construction of Natural Ground Reinforcement\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbReinforcing bar inserter \u2192 A general term that encompasses the above<\/p>\n<p>NEXCO (formerly the Japan Highway Public Corporation) has taken the lead in developing domestic standards, which are cited in many standard documents.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why, when it comes to soil-based slope reinforcement systems, NEXCO\u2019s guidelines inevitably tend to serve as a benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>And since NEXCO actually has such a massive amount of historical data, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that NEXCO is essentially the go-to source.<\/p>\n<p>To be honest, from the perspective of those on the job site, it doesn\u2019t really matter which term is used\u2014it\u2019s all the same to us. The management is the same, the materials are the same, and the construction methods are practically identical! That\u2019s how it feels, anyway.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-65923\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/a37b45e3accf11fb5c180b8145ef5261.jpg\" alt=\"Reinforcement bar installation and rock bolting are the same\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Structure, Materials, and Construction Are Largely the Same | A Construction Method That Secures Special-Shaped Steel Bars Along Their Entire Length<\/h3>\n<p>Even if the names are different, the structure is essentially the same.<\/p>\n<p>According to several sources, a rebar anchor (i.e., rock bolt) consists of reinforcement, grout, a head, and slope stabilization work.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, it looks something like this.<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbReinforcement: Deformed steel bars (steel bars for reinforced concrete).<\/p>\n<p>In an explanation of a certain slope design, SD345 and D19\u2013D29 from JIS G 3112 are used.<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbLength of reinforcement: Typically around 2 to 5 meters, often set in 50-centimeter increments.<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbInjection material: cement slurry or mortar.<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbHead: Secured to the slope reinforcement using a plate (support plate) and a nut.<\/p>\n<p>According to Toyama Prefecture's manual, the standard size is larger than 150 mm \u00d7 150 mm \u00d7 6 mm, and the material must be galvanized.<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbFixation method: \u201cFull-length fixation,\u201d in which the entire length of the reinforcement material is set with a cement-based hardener.<\/p>\n<p>This is where rock bolts (rebar insertion method) differ significantly from ground anchors, as<strong>Since it is a full-surface bonding, the bonded layer does not necessarily have to be hard rock.<\/strong>...that's the gist of it.<\/p>\n<p>This is a topic that often comes up during design reviews, isn\u2019t it? (Moving soil masses and stationary soil masses)<\/p>\n<p>However, to be honest, when the ground conditions are poor and the borehole walls cannot stand on their own, grouting is often insufficient even when rebar is installed.<\/p>\n<p>In fractured zones, cement slurry often doesn\u2019t rise, so it\u2019s frequently impossible to fill the hole without using a bag packer. They are structures with a free length.<\/p>\n<p>\u30fbRock bolt\/rebar installation: Do not apply tensile force. As the ground deforms, the reinforcement passively provides resistance. Full-length anchorage.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese Geotechnical Society also states that, due to their lack of prestressing, ground anchors\u2014even if they appear structurally similar\u2014operate on different principles and mechanisms of stability.<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines for the scope of application are also different.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-65925\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/9c8c3515fe941c76a5318956dd57a9f5.jpg\" alt=\"Comparison Chart of Rock Bolts and Ground Anchors\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the Slope Association\u2019s materials, a general guideline states that the required retaining force for reinforced concrete insertion work should be 300 kN\/m or less; however, if the scale of the landslide is large, the retaining force may be insufficient or the method may become uneconomical, so it is necessary to consider alternative measures, such as ground anchors.<\/p>\n<p>So, to put it simply,<strong>For minor or shallow collapses, use rock bolts (rebar insertion); for large-scale collapses requiring strong reinforcement, use anchors.<\/strong>...which results in this division of roles.<\/p>\n<p>A common point made by various companies was that, because anchors must maintain tensile strength over the long term, they require high-grade materials, corrosion protection, and strict construction management, which in turn leads to higher construction costs.<\/p>\n<p>For large slopes, we conduct a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether it\u2019s better to install 10 rock bolts or two ground anchors as retaining measures.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41124\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/c666f6f01dd15bda39b72dfd173324a3.png\" alt=\"Retaining Wall Construction + Ground Anchor Construction\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Terms Used on Site<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, here\u2019s a mindset to help you avoid getting lost on the job.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, the term \u201crock bolt\u201d originated in the field of mine stabilization and became widely adopted through the NATM method used in tunnel construction; it is a term closely associated with rock mass engineering.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the term \u201crebar insertion work\u201d has a strong connotation of being a method traditionally used to reinforce cut slopes.<\/p>\n<p>So, there may be a subtle difference in nuance: in the context of bedrock or tunnels, it\u2019s often called a \u201crock bolt,\u201d whereas for cut slopes consisting of soil or soft rock, it\u2019s more commonly referred to as \u201crebar insertion work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, to reiterate,<strong>The materials being poured at the slope construction site are essentially the same.<\/strong>That's it.<\/p>\n<p>Insert the irregularly shaped steel bar into the drilled hole and secure its entire length with grout.
