{"id":64723,"date":"2026-06-08T08:00:48","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T23:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/?p=64723"},"modified":"2026-06-04T19:44:06","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T10:44:06","slug":"life-as-a-trainee-in-nepal-interviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/en\/nepal-trainee-interview-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Interviewing Trainees in Nepal | \u201cReasons for Working in Japan\u201d as Seen Through Local Monthly Incomes and Daily Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, everyone.<\/p>\n<p>This is Enta.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of last month, I went to Nepal again ^^<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve written a lot about Nepal on my blog, and this post is another Nepal-themed one, lol.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, the purpose is to interview interns, isn't it?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-45441\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2021-10-04-14.25.03.jpg\" alt=\"Online Interview\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2021-10-04-14.25.03.jpg 600w, https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2021-10-04-14.25.03-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this post, I\u2019ll share my perspective as someone working on the front lines to explore \u201cwhere trainees come from and what motivates them to come to Japan,\u201d while taking a look at their actual monthly incomes and daily lives here.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the monthly income in Nepal?<\/h2>\n<p>I believe it\u2019s important to understand the numbers behind the trainees\u2019 \u201cprevious lives\u201d before hiring them.<\/p>\n<p>Based on online research and interviews I conducted on the ground, it seems that monthly incomes in Nepal are roughly as follows.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kathmandu (urban area)<\/strong>: Even with a college degree, the monthly salary is<strong>20,000 to 50,000 yen<\/strong>or so. Most ordinary people make about<strong>10,000 to 20,000 yen<\/strong>I live there.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regions outside Kathmandu<\/strong>: There are few non-agricultural jobs, and cash income is lower than in urban areas. Even the national average is reportedly less than 10,000 yen per month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rural Areas<\/strong>: About [number] of the population<strong>60 percent<\/strong>...works in agriculture and has almost no cash income\u20143,000 yen or less. Even now, the crops...<strong>Barter<\/strong>It seems there are still some left.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By the way, the minimum wage in Nepal is<strong>17,300 rupees = approximately 18,400 yen<\/strong>There was also a document stating, \u201cRevised in 2022, to be maintained through 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in reality, it's much lower! This number must be a lie!<\/p>\n<p>If you just look at the numbers, you tend to think, \u201cThat\u2019s cheap,\u201d but once you\u2019re actually there, it takes on a whole new meaning.<\/p>\n<pre><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64726\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/d23f3ebf85a4674029649bec22018fd8.jpg\" alt=\"The Countryside\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/pre>\n<h2>Reasons to Stay at a $3-a-Night Hotel<\/h2>\n<p>This time, I stayed at the \u201cRiverside Hotel.\u201d It has an open-air caf\u00e9 next to it, and the rate is $3 per night, which is about 500 yen.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed here for three days.<\/p>\n<p>Hot water comes out, but only barely.<\/p>\n<p>It's hot water that's almost like plain water, lol.<\/p>\n<p>The mattress is so hard you'd think it was a board! And there's no air conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>But with the fan on, it's surprisingly cool!<\/p>\n<p>There's a restaurant on the first floor, and it has Wi-Fi\u2014as far as I'm concerned, it's more than enough for a hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The room smells a little, lol, but for 500 yen a night, I can't complain.<\/p>\n<p>I've made a video showing what the hotel is like \ud83d\udc47\ud83d\udc47\ud83d\udc47<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A $3 Hotel in Nepal\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/esuliE_zRmE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>You\u2019re probably thinking, \u201cWhy would anyone choose to stay in a place like this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As I\u2019ve always said, my main focus during interviews is to put myself in the same situation as the trainees who come to Japan.<\/p>\n<p>That way, I'll be able to understand how they feel, even just a little.<\/p>\n<p>If possible, I\u2019d love to do home visits, too, lol. That way, I can get a feel for the family\u2019s atmosphere and understand their feelings.<\/p>\n<p>This time, one of our interns, who was back home for a short visit, dropped by to see me on short notice ^^<\/p>\n<p>I actually wanted to go to his hometown, but since there was a chance the roads might be blocked by flooding or landslides, preventing me from getting back, I decided not to go this time.<\/p>\n<p>If I had about a week, I could go, though. This time, it was a 3-night, 5-day trip, so I didn't have enough time.<\/p>\n<pre><code><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64727\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-05-26-07.37.13.jpg\" alt=\"A Hook at a $3 Hotel\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/code><\/pre>\n<h2>\"Everyday Life in Nepal\" as Seen from an Open-Air Caf\u00e9<\/h2>\n<p>When you stay at the Riverside Hotel, all sorts of dramatic things happen, lol.<\/p>\n<p>Morning coffee at the open-air caf\u00e9 next door. As I was relaxing and sipping it, some old guy started giving me the stink eye, lol.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of his gaze was another middle-aged man sitting right next to me.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64730\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-05-26-08.12.40.jpg\" alt=\"A Fight at an Open-Air Caf\u00e9 in Nepal\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden, an argument broke out, and it turned into a scuffle between two middle-aged guys lol. All the Nepalis around us were laughing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64731\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-05-26-08.14.18.jpg\" alt=\"A Fight at an Open-Air Caf\u00e9 in Nepal\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It just kept escalating and escalating\u2026 and eventually, for some reason, the two of us were having a nice meal together at a caf\u00e9 (you never know what might happen).<\/p>\n<p>I was calmly filming the whole fight, lol.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is the Riverside Hotel, where things like this happen all the time.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d been drinking coffee here every morning for three days, so I really started to feel like a regular\u2014it was a great atmosphere lol.<\/p>\n<p>This area is one of the poorer parts of Nepal, and there\u2019s a slum right nearby, so, well, there\u2019s a bit of everything here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64728\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-05-26-08.07.28.jpg\" alt=\"Open-Air Caf\u00e9s in Nepal\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It's a really nice open-air caf\u00e9 at a riverside hotel lol<\/p>\n<h2>The fact that people like you just for being Japanese<\/h2>\n<p>It seems that Asians really stand out in a place like this, so I\u2019m often asked, \u201cAre you Chinese?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So when I answer \u201cJapanese,\u201d they reply, \u201cKon\u2019nichiwa!\u201d in Japanese lol<\/p>\n<p>When Japanese people go abroad, they're really well-liked.<\/p>\n<p>People will compliment you, saying things like, \u201cJapan is a great country!\u201d \u201cJapan is the best!\u201d and \u201cNepalese people love Japan!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This just goes to show how wonderful the Japanese of the past must have been. I\u2019m grateful to our ancestors.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the great things about being abroad. People feel free to strike up a conversation, and they\u2019ll help you just because you\u2019re Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, since English doesn't work here, we end up communicating with gestures and facial expressions lol<\/p>\n<p>I talk to them in Japanese too, lol. Even though we don't understand each other, for some reason we end up getting along really well.<\/p>\n<p>Nepalese people are so kind\u2014I highly recommend them!<\/p>\n<h2>Do employers know where their interns are from?<\/h2>\n<p>The interns at your company.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know what their actual lives are like back home? To be honest, a lot of them come from really amazing places.<\/p>\n<p>Please think back to the monthly income figure I mentioned earlier.<\/p>\n<p>In that kind of environment, he\u2019s come all the way to Japan and is working hard for his family.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, I hope that we Japanese, as employers, can work even harder to contribute.<\/p>\n<p>While protecting their families back home, they are also protecting Japan\u2019s infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Even in civil engineering projects, the number of sites that simply can\u2019t operate without them is steadily increasing.<\/p>\n<p>I'm truly grateful to have them in my life.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64732\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-64732 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/2026-05-26-09.52.00.jpg\" alt=\"Riverside Hotels and Open-Air Cafes in Nepal\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-64732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2190Riverside Hotel   \u2192Open-Air Caf\u00e9<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Companies that hire interns should definitely visit that country.<\/p>\n<p>When you experience the culture and way of life in that country, you'll have such an amazing experience that you'll find yourself thinking, \"So this is what culture shock feels like!?\"<\/p>\n<p>Then there's the food, lol.
