\"He's quiet, but he gets the job done.\" \"The quieter someone is, the more trustworthy they are.\"<\/p>\n
This is a phrase I hear a lot on the job, lol.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, there are also quiet people who get on others\u2019 nerves\u2014people who are told things like, \u201cI have no idea what you\u2019re thinking\u201d or \u201cStop keeping quiet and tell us what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n
The same personality trait might be praised in one situation but criticized in another.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve always felt that this isn\u2019t so much a matter of personality as it is simply a case of people being treated differently based on the convenience of those doing the evaluating.<\/p>\n
So in this post, I\u2019ll take an objective look at the question, \u201cAre quiet people really strong on the job?\u201d\u2014without relying on mere intuition.<\/p>\n

To put it simply, there is no direct link between personality traits and job performance.<\/p>\n
As I looked into various things online, I found that according to analyses of the Big Five (five-factor model) in psychology,<\/p>\n
The trait that best predicts job performance is \u201cconscientiousness,\u201d with a correlation coefficient of around \u03c1 = 0.19. (I\u2019m totally lost at this point\u2026 lol)<\/p>\n
On the other hand, the correlation between extraversion and job performance is around \u03c1 = 0.10, which is about half that of conscientiousness (Oh, right...)<\/p>\n
Research suggests that \u201cbeing serious and persistent\u201d has a greater impact on work performance than \u201cbeing quiet or talkative.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even though I think, \u201cWell, that makes sense,\u201d it\u2019s the same on the job, too.<\/p>\n
In my 30 years of experience, the most reliable craftsmen were the \u201cquiet and sincere\u201d type.<\/p>\n
However, there are also people who are \u201cquiet and careless\u2014or rather, quiet and do nothing\u201d\u2014and it\u2019s impossible to get any work done with them.<\/p>\n
So it seems that whether or not someone is sincere matters more than their personality!<\/p>\n
It's okay as long as they're sincere, even if they're chatty, lol.<\/p>\n
That said, there are certainly advantages to being quiet by nature.<\/p>\n
\u2460 Less likely to cause unnecessary mistakes<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n Since the time spent talking is short, it\u2019s harder to lose focus while working.<\/p>\n This is a huge advantage in situations where a moment\u2019s concentration\u2014such as when checking items between different work tasks\u2014can mean the difference between an accident and safety.<\/p>\n \u2461 Less likely to cause interpersonal conflicts<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n Since there are few slip-ups, conflicts among craftsmen and friction with the general contractor are less likely to occur.<\/p>\n The longer the project, the more this calmness benefits the team.<\/p>\n \u2462 They tend to master new skills quickly<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n It's because they spend more time \"observing\" and \"imitating\" rather than talking.<\/p>\n I get the impression that quiet, young workers often pick up tasks that rely on instinct\u2014such as trowel finishing for sprayed concrete formwork or operating machinery\u2014more quickly than others.<\/p>\n Anyway, I\u2019m definitely paying close attention! (Though there are some people who just zone out while pretending to watch, lol.)<\/p>\n On the other hand, I\u2019ll be honest about the downsides as well.<\/p>\n If you try to gloss over this, it'll be a bit of a hassle on site, lol.<\/p>\n \u2460 Delays in reporting, communicating, and consulting<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n This is the biggest one.<\/p>\n According to data from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on the causes of workplace accidents, more than 90% of such accidents are attributed to \u201cunsafe acts and unsafe conditions\u201d (which is just common sense, isn\u2019t it?).<\/p>\n Many of these \u201cunsafe conditions\u201d involve cases where someone was aware of the issue but did not report it.<\/p>\n People who are quiet tend to keep their judgments to themselves, thinking, \u201cThey\u2019ll figure it out without me saying anything\u201d or \u201cI\u2019ll just say it later,\u201d and if this is delayed, it can quickly lead to an accident.<\/p>\n \u2461 They are more likely to be at a disadvantage when it comes to promotions and evaluations<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n This may sound blunt, but research apparently shows that introverts tend to have a harder time exhibiting \u201cleader-like behavior,\u201d which lowers their chances of getting promoted!<\/p>\n Even though he is praised on the job for \u201cquietly doing good work,\u201d he is rarely recommended by site representatives or foremen.<\/p>\n This is less a matter of the individual's responsibility and more a matter of how the evaluator perceives the situation, but it does put the individual at a disadvantage in reality.<\/p>\n I believe that whether a quiet employee succeeds or fails depends more on the \"manager\" than on the employee's personality.<\/p>\n If you simply ask everyone during morning meetings or KY activities, \u201cPlease speak up if you notice anything,\u201d you\u2019ll never get any input from quiet people.<\/p>\n This is a personality issue; it's not the person's fault.<\/p>\n Ask them directly, have them write it down, or briefly confirm it one-on-one before starting the task.<\/p>\n If you put such a system in place, the observational skills of quiet people can actually serve as a safety net for the team. (That\u2019s what people commonly refer to as \u201cthe ability to ask questions\u201d!)<\/p>\n Conversely, under managers who jump to the conclusion that silence means \u201ca lack of motivation,\u201d talented, quiet craftsmen will leave one after another.<\/p>\n Personally, I feel that there are really a lot of companies that are losing employees here.<\/p>\n There are plenty of quiet, skilled craftsmen out there! But even though they know full well that their work isn\u2019t easily recognized, it\u2019s not like they can just change that, is it!?<\/p>\n That's why there are often problems on the part of leaders and supervisors, right?<\/p>\n Conversely, it\u2019s also clear what the quieter person should do to avoid being at a disadvantage in the workplace.<\/p>\n \"Say just one brief thing right then and there about whatever you notice.\"<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n That's all.<\/p>\n You don't have to talk for a long time, and you don't have to force yourself to act cheerful.<\/p>\n \"There's a little water leaking here.\" \"The anchor is out of position.\"<\/p>\n Whether or not that one phrase is said can make all the difference in terms of both evaluation and safety.<\/p>\n This isn't about changing your personality; it's about adding one more action to your routine.<\/p>\n Staying true to my quiet nature, I\u2019ll just send a brief report.<\/p>\n People who can do this are highly valued on the job for a long time.<\/p>\n It just means you should keep working hard even if you're quiet, lol.<\/p>\n Both the idea that \u201cbeing quiet makes you unsuitable for the field\u201d and the idea that \u201cbeing quiet means you have the right craftsman\u2019s temperament\u201d are crude generalizations.<\/p>\n The outcome depends more on sincerity and whether you can manage to say at least a few words than on your personality itself.<\/p>\n I feel that it\u2019s in the best interest of both employers hiring quiet people and the quiet people themselves not to misunderstand this point.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n See you later.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Hello, everyone.
