Don't machines tend to break down in pretty much the same way at every worksite?<\/p>\n
The moment we moved to the next job site, the machine broke down...<\/p>\n
I wonder what this timing is all about.<\/p>\n

The other day, the air-feed motor on our suspended drilling machine broke down.<\/p>\n
So, we're deploying a replacement machine to the site and retrieving the broken one.<\/p>\n
This suspended core drill is actually pretty durable.<\/p>\n
I guess you could say the design is simple\u2014we\u2019ve been using ours for the past 10 years without a single breakdown.<\/p>\n
However, the air feed motor broke this time.<\/p>\n
That's because I hadn't checked that part.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve actually changed the oil in the gear section of this air motor quite a few times, but,<\/p>\n
I had never opened the air motor section of the unit at all.<\/p>\n
As you can see in the photo, it has turned black. This is a mixture of grease and iron filings.<\/p>\n
As the grease containing iron particles circulates, it acts as an abrasive and gradually wears down bearings and other components.<\/p>\n
Even the cylinders are being worn down little by little.<\/p>\n

In the end, it\u2019s just like skiing\u2014it\u2019s the same as skiing down a mountain you\u2019ve never skied before.<\/p>\n
The mountain where safety measures were taken is not slippery, but the neighboring mountain where no measures were taken is slippery.<\/p>\n
The parts of the machine that are inspected don't break, but the parts that aren't inspected do.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s only natural, I suppose, but it\u2019s still hard to accept that losses will occur.<\/p>\n
It's just a little thing, isn't it?<\/p>\n

Through this experience, I learned that by inspecting areas that are often overlooked (parts that are rarely opened) during routine checks, we can ensure that construction is carried out safely and reliably.<\/p>\n
I've come to realize just how difficult it is to do the ordinary things in an ordinary way.<\/p>\n
