{"id":56031,"date":"2025-10-06T08:00:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T23:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/?p=56031"},"modified":"2026-05-16T16:14:47","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T07:14:47","slug":"retaining-wall-reinforcement-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/en\/retaining-wall-reinforce-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Retaining Wall Reinforcement Methods from a Slope Engineer\u2019s Perspective (Part 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, everyone.<\/p>\n<p>This is Enta.<\/p>\n<p>On my way home from an event the other day, I stopped by the site of a retaining wall collapse in Suginami Ward, Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56033\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2025-10-03-10.22.38.jpg\" alt=\"Retaining Wall Collapse\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sight of the house just lying there is really striking.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56034\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2025-10-03-10.36.58.jpg\" alt=\"Retaining Wall Collapse\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was able to take photos from the roads on both sides as you face it, but the road leading to the site was closed to traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I knew it wasn't going to collapse, since it wasn't my land, I couldn't go any further...<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A shot taken from a distance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-56035\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/431110b44ca5c916d6aa080e7cc7c17d.webp\" alt=\"Retaining Wall Collapse\" width=\"628\" height=\"353\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The photo in the news is taken from above, so you can get a general idea.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to news reports and what I've heard, this is a type of construction commonly seen in hilly areas like the one described below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56037\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1d499936b329a8a0224c2dc389323ec8.png\" alt=\"House Affected by Retaining Wall Collapse\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A retaining wall is built against the natural ground, and then the house is built on the resulting embankment.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if the natural ground was relatively solid? But I suppose that was good enough back then.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a result of aging and the recent heavy rainfall, cracks have formed in this retaining wall.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56011\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/c6b4f5b0d2ef264fc87c66d9ec2755a0.jpg\" alt=\"Retaining Wall Collapse\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At first glance, the retaining wall itself looks like it's made of concrete, but I couldn't see any rebar.<\/p>\n<p>I don't know exactly how it was constructed back then, but it seems to be separate from the concrete on the sides as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to news reports and other sources, rainwater and spring water\u2014or something similar\u2014accumulated on this embankment, causing soil pressure to build up and leading to its collapse.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56038\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/e178151331c2ac51f006394e23da72f4.png\" alt=\"House with a Collapsed Retaining Wall: Earth Pressure\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It's something like this.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To begin with, the Kanto Loam Formation tends to weaken rapidly when water penetrates it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s entirely possible that this caused the apparent cohesion to decrease, leading to an increase in earth pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Maya, there are also reports that there was no drainage system in place when water backed up.<\/p>\n<p>And then it all came crashing down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56039\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/29880828773e736d2deac4dfcf311243.jpg\" alt=\"Suginami Retaining Wall Collapse\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking at photos taken before the collapse, it seems like there was a drainpipe at the bottom, but...<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I think I could have checked it a little more closely if I could have gotten inside, but as it stands, I have absolutely no idea.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, what will we construction workers be doing in places like this going forward?<\/p>\n<p>What kind of construction work is best?<\/p>\n<p>After all, as slope engineers, reinforced earth wall construction is our specialty\u2014it\u2019s what we design and build on a daily basis, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>I'm going to try to think things through by making full use of that line of thinking.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>See you later.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, everyone.
