Do the technical interns at your company complete their full three-year term and then return to their home countries?<\/p>\n
Or will you extend your stay by two more years before heading home?<\/p>\n

Initially, the Technical Intern Training Program Association explained that most participants would return home after about three years.<\/p>\n
So, we replenished our staff every year, taking into account the projected headcount three years down the line.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Half a year before the first cohort\u2019s three-year mark, I asked, \u201cYou\u2019re going back to your home country, right?\u201d and the answer was \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n
Uh...<\/p>\n
Even though I thought that, I just told myself, \u201cWell, as long as I feel comfortable, that\u2019s good enough,\u201d and went along with my own interpretation.<\/p>\n
Plus, since they\u2019re part of the first cohort, I\u2019ve grown quite attached to them and think they\u2019re adorable, so we\u2019re heading straight into our fifth year. (This year marks the end of the five-year period, and starting in July, they\u2019ll transition to the Specified Skilled Worker program.)<\/p>\n
On the other hand, all the second-year students went home. (Some of the second-year students wanted to stay, but due to various reasons, that was rejected.)<\/p>\n

And the third-year students.<\/p>\n
All the third-year students have already said they're staying. ...<\/p>\n
We don't know about the 4th-generation members yet, but there are already some who have said they want to stay...<\/p>\n
Going forward, four members of the first cohort will transition to the Specified Skilled Worker status.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d heard that many technical interns tend to disappear or quit and return home quite easily, and,<\/p>\n
That's what I thought, but surprisingly, they haven't quit (not that I want them to, lol).<\/p>\n
At first, we kept hiring more and more people because we were told that people were quitting at a rapid pace every year, but,<\/p>\n
Since I'm not quitting, the number just keeps going up and up lol<\/p>\n
With that in mind, six people from Nepal will be joining us again this August.<\/p>\n

Seriously, there are just way too many people...<\/p>\n
It seems like the idea is to make up for the labor shortage with foreign workers, but considering the number of Japanese people available to train them, we\u2019ve hit a ceiling.<\/p>\n
After all, we need Japanese people who can provide instruction at a certain level or higher.<\/p>\n
If we can't provide training to both construction workers and construction supervisors, safety may be neglected, or<\/p>\n
The quality of the finished product will decline, and the overall standard will drop.<\/p>\n

If standards drop, accidents will happen. (Not just in terms of safety, but in other areas as well.)<\/p>\n
It kind of feels like Japan has gone back to the days before the period of rapid economic growth, when there were few engineers.<\/p>\n
Work is passed down through oral tradition, and eventually it reaches a certain level.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
We absolutely cannot accept work that falls below a certain standard, so making those adjustments is extremely difficult.<\/p>\n
This looks like it's going to take a while...<\/p>\n
That said, it would be great if there were a ridiculous amount of work, but that still hasn't happened yet.<\/p>\n
I really hope they can find a way to address both the labor shortage and the lack of work.<\/p>\n
After all, if there's no work, there's no employment or anything like that, lol.<\/p>\n
