Lately, I\u2019ve been getting quite a few calls for private construction projects, such as reinforcing stone walls and stabilizing slopes at private homes; after conducting a survey, clients request that I carry out the work.<\/p>\n
This is a very common pattern.<\/p>\n
From a design perspective, we often use empirical methods during construction, but,<\/p>\n
Since it doesn't require as much strength as public structures, we've designed it simply to prevent it from collapsing.<\/p>\n
(In some cases, stability calculations as well)<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The issue at the site described above is a shift caused by the stone masonry bulging outward and the outflow of soil from inside.<\/p>\n
This project involves installing rebar on the surface of the masonry, followed by sprayed mortar, rebar insertion, and drainage work.<\/p>\n
As long as you do at least this much, private slopes will be fine.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Lately, I've been making a point of including water drainage in particular.<\/p>\n
In the end, it all comes down to how to drain the water, doesn't it?<\/p>\n
It looks like it's going to boil down to that.<\/p>\n

After all the different experiences I've had\u2014with construction, construction management, and design\u2014I've come to realize that drainage really is the key, lol.<\/p>\n
That's the deal, lol<\/p>\n
Before I start doing complicated calculations or thinking things through, I'll just drain the water for now.<\/p>\n
That's the general idea, I guess.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Going forward, private-sector measures to prevent collapse will be,<\/p>\n
Surface Treatment (surface appearance), Rebar Installation (measures to prevent thin-layer collapse), and Drainage Work (measures to counteract sudden soil pressure during heavy rain)<\/p>\n
It looks like that's how it's going to turn out.<\/p>\n
Well, I'll come up with some \"convenient\" evidence, I suppose.<\/p>\n
(I'll make all sorts of things when the Red Zone is lifted.)<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A project of this scale is going to cost quite a bit of money.<\/p>\n
I think it would take a great deal of resolve for a private citizen to release this.<\/p>\n
That said, I\u2019m committed to ensuring the work is done thoroughly and reliably, but,<\/p>\n
It looks like we're going to end up injecting about 10 times the planned amount at that site\u2014it's pretty funny lol.<\/p>\n
It's hard to bring that up as a change, lol<\/p>\n
Well, if all it takes is some cement and a few workers, I guess I\u2019ll just have to grit my teeth and get the job done.<\/p>\n

I ordered 300 bags of cement for next Monday lol<\/p>\n
