The other day, I had a chance to talk with a contractor working in the construction industry in Chiba.<\/p>\n
There, things were happening that we public sector workers could never have imagined lol<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
We slope engineers, civil engineers, and other public works contractors are pretty much the same\u2014once we finish our assigned tasks, we head home, right?<\/p>\n
This \"cut-off point\" refers to a point in a task where, if you continue beyond it, it becomes overtime or you can no longer stop in the middle.<\/p>\n
I think it's normal to clean up and go home once you're done.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
However, on construction sites, if the scheduled work hours are set from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., apparently you\u2019re not allowed to go home!<\/p>\n
Well, I suppose it depends on the job site (and the general contractor), but,<\/p>\n
If I leave early, the company gets complaints saying I wasn't there until the end of the workday, or<\/p>\n
I heard there might be a price reduction!!!<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Apparently, you have to be there even if you have absolutely nothing to do, and it seems you\u2019re not allowed to be there unless you have a very good reason,<\/p>\n
Apparently, you can't leave until you've checked in with the site manager.<\/p>\n
Now that I'm done cleaning and have nothing else to do, I might as well smoke a cigarette and wait until it's time, lol (This is exactly what I mean by a total waste of time).<\/p>\n

Apparently, it\u2019s quite common for the head of a company like that to say something like, \u201cWe\u2019re the ones bringing business to your place, you know!?\u201d and,<\/p>\n
Abusive language is just par for the course.<\/p>\n
Apparently, because the director makes abusive remarks, his subordinate\u2014a supervisor in his late 20s or early 30s\u2014also spews abusive language left and right.<\/p>\n

Craftsmen are human, after all, and even though they\u2019re adults and wouldn\u2019t actually lose their temper, they\u2019d probably just want to fade away quietly, but\u2014<\/p>\n
Since that\u2019s also childish, I might talk to the company and ask them to make improvements (a very mature response).<\/p>\n
I hear there are some minor clashes here and there, lol<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I also heard the names of those two general contractors, but,<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve heard that at mid-sized general contractors\u2014the kind with branch offices and annual revenues of around 100 to 300 billion\u2014there tend to be quite a few branch managers like that.<\/p>\n
It seems that today's major general contractors are very well-trained and treat people with great courtesy, but,<\/p>\n
I hear that mid-sized general contractors in the construction industry are absolutely terrible.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Even though you're working as a contractor, it's a bit of a problem when you're told to leave on time, isn't it?<\/p>\n
There are plans for the next day and plans for other sites, right?<\/p>\n
Plus, since we finished at a natural stopping point, continuing any further would mean working overtime, and<\/p>\n
Whenever I mention working overtime, people are like, \u201cDon\u2019t work overtime,\u201d lol.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
If, for some reason, a contract for services \u201cspecifies the hours of work,\u201d I can understand that, but\u2014<\/p>\n
Generally speaking, there aren't any specific time requirements for construction contracts.<\/p>\n
Like, I have to be there, lol<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
In our case, at JR-affiliated job sites, there are rules such as \u201cspecified times for walking on the tracks,\u201d so,<\/p>\n
There are times when you can't just go back and forth without thinking, though.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s pretty rough being inside a regular office building, isn\u2019t it? (It kind of pisses me off.) lol<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been this way for a long time with construction companies\u2014I tend to think of them as working under the site supervisor rather than the general contractor.<\/p>\n
Sure, ultimately it\u2019s the general contractor, but the people on-site want to work with the supervisor they like.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
I want to do it for the director who\u2019s helped me so much\u2014I\u2019d even say, \u201cIf you say so, I\u2019ll do it!\u201d<\/p>\n
A director like that wouldn't treat us contractors so carelessly, would they?<\/p>\n
There really are a lot of polite people!<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
To begin with, I think a coach who makes abusive remarks isn't capable of doing the job.<\/p>\n
So, they\u2019re the kind of manager who gets irritated, lashes out with harsh words, and blames others\u2014that\u2019s the level they\u2019re at.<\/p>\n
Lately, whenever such problems arise there,<\/p>\n
Apparently, the company's construction department head and executives are going to the contractor to apologize and smooth things over, lol.<\/p>\n
It must be tough for companies, too.<\/p>\n
We can't get orders without people like that, and even when they're around, they tend to give us low ratings for all sorts of reasons.<\/p>\n

Come to think of it, aren't a lot of our general contractors really easygoing people?<\/p>\n
I feel like there are so many nice people in civil engineering that I sometimes wonder if everyone in the field is just naturally laid-back.<\/p>\n
Well, since there\u2019s a solid timeline (or sometimes not), I guess it just comes from having some peace of mind, huh? lol<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
That said, there are still people who think, \u201cBut if you go to a general contractor for public works projects\u2026\u201d lol<\/p>\n
While there are pros and cons, work is all about helping each other out.<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s work together, respect one another, and ensure we carry out the construction safely.<\/p>\n
