This is the Moldam construction method, which has been in high demand recently.<\/p>\n

What kinds of stone walls collapse?<\/p>\n

There are many different types of stone masonry out there, and in some cases, the backfill isn't properly filled with concrete, or<\/p>\n

Stone walls that already have cracks in them have begun to crumble and will collapse during heavy rain or similar conditions.<\/p>\n

Even if the gaps in the stone wall are tightly packed, its ability to hold back soil is very limited to begin with.<\/p>\n

I think it would be better if the residential units on top were as light as they used to be.<\/p>\n

But I can\u2019t help thinking that, if we\u2019re going to do this anyway, we might as well install a drainage system (subsurface drainage) under the house.<\/p>\n

When building a house, following this method will minimize the earth pressure acting on the stone wall.<\/p>\n

Especially during heavy rain, water and soil can push against the stone wall!<\/p>\n

Water is the cause of earth pressure.<\/p>\n

Simply removing that will make the ground much more stable.<\/p>\n

Since installing culverts in just a few places can be quite effective, I think it\u2019s a good idea to include them in the foundation when building a house.<\/p>\n
