The other day, while talking with the site supervisor from our general contractor, I learned that there are apparently some areas where only one company submits a bid, even when a call for bids is issued.<\/p>\n
What?!<\/p>\n
That's what you're thinking, right? lol<\/p>\n

Apparently, they have a set territory, and other companies absolutely never go into that area, lol.<\/p>\n
Apparently, it\u2019s not even a figure a general contractor would quote.<\/p>\n

In this day and age, you\u2019d probably think, \u201cHuh?\u201d right?<\/p>\n
However, in some areas, this kind of thing is actually happening.<\/p>\n

However, when I listened more closely, it turns out that while there are indeed territorial boundaries, the main issue is that since there\u2019s no supervisor when working on local projects, they can\u2019t submit a bid.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s like, \u201cWe\u2019ve come this far!\u201d right?<\/p>\n

Apparently, as long as there\u2019s a director, nothing is impossible, but rather than going out of their way to a town a little further away to get work, they say they can make a little more money by taking on local jobs if those are available.<\/p>\n
The director is already...Designation as an Endangered Occupation<\/span><\/strong><\/span>It's okay if that happens, right? (Not that it ever does, lol)<\/p>\n I get the feeling this story isn't limited to just the area where I heard it.<\/p>\n Isn't this a phenomenon that's already happening all across the country?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n My former boss is 73 years old now and works as a site supervisor.<\/p>\n Back then, my boss remarked, \u201cEven at the big companies, there aren\u2019t as many directors as there used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n It's our generation.<\/p>\n When I was still working as a site supervisor, I had only two junior colleagues.<\/p>\n The number of new hires is declining year after year, and even though we\u2019re a nationwide company, we have fewer than 10 new hires...<\/p>\n It seems he's recovered a bit more now (not that I know for sure).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n My 73-year-old former boss said he has two more years left in his coaching career (which is still a long time).<\/p>\n Generally speaking, quite a few people say they want to retire around age 70 (since people in this age group are still eligible for pensions and social security).<\/p>\n With so few directors at this point, there will probably be even fewer in five years, and in ten years, there will be none at all...<\/p>\n <\/p>\n When it comes to bidding, it\u2019s quite possible that there are many instances where the bid is unsuccessful (no winning bidder), isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n If that happens, who will participate in the bidding??<\/p>\n Well, I'm sure the national government and local municipalities are thinking about it too, but I really wonder how things will turn out...<\/p>\n It looks like subcontractors might start getting scored too, and we might even see bids based on overall performance before long!?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Well, I don't know how things will turn out, but that just goes to show that on-site supervisors are an endangered profession.<\/p>\n In a way, it really feels like the director\u2019s time has come!<\/p>\n I think if the young director tries a little harder, things will change.
