{"id":43149,"date":"2020-12-01T08:00:01","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T23:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/?p=43149"},"modified":"2026-05-17T13:32:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T04:32:25","slug":"the-era-of-processed-iron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/en\/era-of-processed-iron\/","title":{"rendered":"Is This the Age of Processed Steel? | Trends in Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, everyone.<\/p>\n<p>This is Enta.<\/p>\n<p>Only one month left in the year!<\/p>\n<p>Let's stay focused!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The other day, I was looking into various spacers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-39832\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/PC-600x460.jpg\" alt=\"PC Spacer\" width=\"600\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/PC.jpg 600w, https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/PC-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Spacers for slopes were originally designed for thickness control.<\/p>\n<p>We still use it for thickness control.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The goal isn't for the last net to end up in the middle, is it?<\/p>\n<p>Originally, when you draw lath onto that cross-sectional diagram of sprayed mortar and concrete, everyone would naturally place the lath lines right in the middle, wouldn't they?<\/p>\n<p>Back then, if I was marking the positions of the lath on the drawings, I would have done the same.<\/p>\n<p>That's because the one in the middle is easier to understand as a picture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before I knew it, the mesh had to be centered (as I was told during the inspection).<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it\u2019s true that the middle section is less prone to rust, but since it\u2019s actually secured with anchor pins, part of it is attached to the natural ground, and<\/p>\n<p>Most of the old mesh lath used for spray-applied coatings is rusted.<\/p>\n<p>That said, since strength isn't a requirement for the mesh, there's no problem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also, regarding the current approach to spacers\u2014based on something I recently heard at a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism construction site\u2014it was explained that installing spacers is considered a form of creative problem-solving in the context of as-built inspection.<\/p>\n<p>In short, it was a product designed to ensure sufficient thickness.<\/p>\n<p>This means I no longer believe it is necessary for the top mesh to be in the center.<\/p>\n<p>However, as long as it reliably ensures that final result, that\u2019s fine, but\u2014<span style=\"font-size: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">No impurities allowed<\/span><\/strong><\/span>That was the explanation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The term \"impurities\" as used here refers to anything other than concrete or mortar that is of a quality equal to or greater than that of the main concrete structure.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%; height: 36px;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 18px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%; height: 18px;\">General Specifications for Civil Engineering Works, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (March Heisei 25)<\/p>\n<p>1-3-7-4 Assembly<\/p>\n<p>Spacers used to ensure the required concrete cover for reinforcing bars must be made of concrete or mortar and must be of a quality equal to or greater than that of the main concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that if you intend to use a spacer other than the one specified, you must consult with a supervising officer.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 18px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%; height: 18px;\">Standard Specifications for Concrete [Construction Volume: Construction Standards], Established in 2012, Japan Society of Civil Engineers<\/p>\n<p>10.4 Reinforcement Assembly<\/p>\n<p>In these construction standards, the general rule is to use mortar or concrete spacers, taking into account strength, durability, and appearance.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Similar things are mentioned in other sources as well, but,<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">In short, the spacers in the main sections should be made of concrete, mortar, or a material of equivalent quality.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, if that's the case,<span style=\"font-size: 150%; color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Plastic ones can't be used<\/strong><\/span>So that's how it is.
