\"General<\/p>\n

For temporary construction management engineers, technical skills and knowledge are essential.<\/h2>\n

It goes without saying that for construction management engineers working as temporary employees at construction sites both in Japan and abroad to earn a living, their success depends on their basic technical skills, such as construction management and drafting.<\/p>\n

Aside from that, there are also workplace relationships and the unique rules of the general contractor where you\u2019re assigned, but without basic technical skills, you won\u2019t be able to succeed as a professional temporary worker. Otherwise, you\u2019ll just be treated as a mere number, exploited for cheap labor.<\/p>\n

We also need to adapt to the unique characteristics of each general contractor. There are significant differences in common sense and technical knowledge among the people working on-site at the general contractor where we\u2019re assigned, so we have to adjust accordingly.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, full-time employees at major general contractors believe that their own way of doing things is \u201cabsolutely correct\u201d and \u201cunparalleled\u201d\u2014but only within their own company. You have to work alongside a whole swarm of people who have become \u201cfrogs in a well\u201d or \u201carrogant know-it-alls.\u201d<\/p>\n

Consequently, it\u2019s quite common for contract engineers like me\u2014who have worked for various general contractors and seen construction sites both in Japan and abroad\u2014to encounter situations where, upon joining such an organization, we find ourselves scratching our heads, thinking, \u201cThis is clearly off\u201d or \u201cThe quality is poor.\u201d<\/p>\n

In situations like that, how should you respond?<\/p>\n

Should I tell the general contractor where I'm assigned, \"Black is black\"?<\/h2>\n

Needless to say, on construction sites\u2014whether in Japan or abroad\u2014the most logical approach isn\u2019t always adopted. Even when discussing technical matters alone, the underlying assumptions aren\u2019t always the same.<\/p>\n

Even though I know intellectually that \u201cthe world isn\u2019t all about logic,\u201d I believe that, as an engineer, it\u2019s a matter of principle that \u201cI can\u2019t call something white when it\u2019s clearly black.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, instead of dithering over what to do, I make it my top priority to figure out for myself what\u2019s really right\u2014no matter what the people at the general contractor where I\u2019m assigned say. It\u2019s important not to just follow the lead of the full-time employees or get swept up in the atmosphere, but to solidify my own knowledge where it\u2019s still vague.<\/p>\n

I want you to keep digging until you're absolutely certain of what the right answer really is.<\/p>\n

However, you should be flexible in how you make that argument. If you press too hard on \u201cinconvenient truths\u201d for the general contractor you\u2019re assigned to, your contract will be terminated immediately.<\/p>\n

I, too, once had a bitter experience at a construction site overseas. The site management by that general contractor was quite sloppy, and they showed no intention of stopping the substandard work just because we weren\u2019t in Japan. I warned them repeatedly, but every \u201coutsider who spoke up\u201d was systematically fired. I believe the general contractor responsible for this project will eventually face serious social and international repercussions (I intend to share the full details of this incident in the future and bring it to the public\u2019s attention).<\/p>\n

A Sloppy Construction Site Run by a General Contractor That Uses Temporary Workers<\/h2>\n

At that general contractor\u2019s construction site, even the most basic standards\u2014such as bending, splicing, and anchoring rebar\u2014were not being followed.<\/p>\n

I pointed this out to them repeatedly, but the people from the general contractor insisted, \u201cThat\u2019s fine!\u201d and wouldn\u2019t budge.<\/p>\n

Since the person from the general contractor said so, I initially turned a blind eye, thinking, \u201cOh well, whatever!\u201d But when I realized there were no rebar layout drawings and it was my turn to draw them, I suddenly found myself at a loss. I figured that since I was the one drawing them, I couldn\u2019t just slap together a sloppy set of drawings.<\/p>\n

In the end, even though I was just a temporary employee, my pride as an engineer wouldn\u2019t let me, so I drew proper drawings\u2014different from the ones I\u2019d made up until then.<\/p>\n

That didn't sit well with the people from the general contractor. \"It's because of the temp workers that the site is in chaos!\" they yelled at me.<\/p>\n

In the end, I lost my temper and was sent back home.<\/p>\n

However, even in situations like these, I made sure to prove my worth as an engineer.<\/p>\n

I was finally able to gain a firm grasp of the \u201cdetailed knowledge and information about rebar\u201d that had previously been vague to me\u2014even more so than the engineers from the general contractor who were actually on site.<\/p>\n

For us construction engineers, mastering precise techniques is our top priority. \u201cEven if we fall, we won\u2019t get back up empty-handed!\u201d We must always maintain that mindset.<\/p>\n

What Site Managers Need Next After Construction Skills<\/h2>\n

Managing a worksite requires a solid and extensive knowledge base, but that alone isn't enough.<\/p>\n

You must be able to communicate necessary information in a way that workers can understand, taking into account the on-site conditions, as well as the workers\u2019 skill levels and numbers. This is the most difficult aspect at overseas construction sites.<\/p>\n

So, it\u2019s only natural that engineers who are considered top-notch in Japan are completely useless overseas.<\/p>\n

How can someone who is used to giving instructions to top-level craftsmen in accordance with Japanese laws and regulations possibly provide any kind of guidance to a bunch of people who, until just yesterday, were doing farm work with hoes?<\/p>\n

Just how far back do I have to go to explain the correct installation method?<\/p>\n

While testing the waters, start by bringing it up to at least an average level. That\u2019s the first step, but don\u2019t rush it. Nothing is going to change overnight.<\/p>\n

It takes two to three months to assess the workers\u2019 capabilities and earn their trust. It\u2019s not uncommon to encounter situations where knowledge gained in Japan is completely useless. Unless you can persevere, construction management overseas will be difficult.<\/p>\n

At construction sites overseas, you\u2019re also required to adapt to differences in language, customs, food, religion, and so on. English is a must. Occasionally, you\u2019ll see employees from major Japanese general contractors who can\u2019t speak English, but most of them are useless\u2014you can\u2019t even have a proper conversation with them.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, no matter where in the world you work, the people you\u2019re giving instructions to are human beings, not machines. It\u2019s a universal truth that construction engineers must be mindful of the emotions of the people on-site.<\/p>\n
