{"id":42431,"date":"2020-08-12T08:00:29","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T23:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/?p=42431"},"modified":"2026-05-17T12:07:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T03:07:50","slug":"seeing-but-not-looking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/en\/see-but-not-looking\/","title":{"rendered":"Seeing but Not Seeing | Observational Skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, everyone.<\/p>\n<p>This is Enta.<\/p>\n<p>I was working in Nagano the whole time last week, and there was something that made me realize just how inadequate I am.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My lower back had been hurting all week, so I called for a massage.<\/p>\n<p>The reason my back hurts is that I've been doing a lot of desk work lately and have been sitting in a chair the whole time.<\/p>\n<p>I was really stuck on that for a while lol<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The hotel doorbell rang\u2014ding-dong\u2014and I opened the door and said, \u201cCome on in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So I lay down on the bed right away, but since he didn't come in at all and the door closed, I went to open it again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-42443\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/massage_obaasan2.png\" alt=\"Massage\" width=\"472\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/massage_obaasan2.png 472w, https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/massage_obaasan2-283x300.png 283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And as soon as he walked in, he stepped on every single one of my shoes and indoor slippers, so I just thought, \u201cThere sure are some strange people out there,\u201d as I went ahead with my massage.<\/p>\n<p>Also, that person is really good at giving massages.<\/p>\n<p>It's done so skillfully that it feels both painful and pleasurable, lulling you to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before we knew it, 60 minutes had passed, and the session was over.<\/p>\n<p>So when I saw the massage therapist\u2019s face, I was taken aback!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The massage therapist was both blind and deaf.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"What Is a Deaf-Blind Person?\" href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E7%9B%B2%E3%82%8D%E3%81%86%E8%80%85#:~:text=%E7%9B%B2%E3%82%8D%E3%81%86%E8%80%85%EF%BC%88%E7%9B%B2%E8%81%BE%E8%80%85,%E3%81%A8%E5%91%BC%E3%81%B0%E3%82%8C%E3%82%8B%E3%81%93%E3%81%A8%E3%82%82%E3%81%82%E3%82%8B%E3%80%82\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What Is a Deaf-Blind Person?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At that moment, I<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 150%;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\"I can see, but I don't see a thing!\"<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was stunned.<\/p>\n<p>At my own inadequacy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>People who can see seem to see, but they don't really see.<\/p>\n<p>I got the feeling that there must be a lot of people who haven't seen it.<\/p>\n<p>I'm one of them, too.<\/p>\n<p>Even though we think we're paying attention, we end up overlooking important things.<\/p>\n<p>I don't know what it was, but I should have realized it at the time when I saw him walking around in his shoes or slippers.<\/p>\n<p>After all, there was a chance they could have tripped over it and gotten hurt.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a lack of imagination.<\/p>\n<p>I had just taken it for granted without even realizing it.<\/p>\n<p>It's what's known as the \"normalcy bias.\"<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-41251\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/28fd8e1c1ea12588c339259fb449cf7b2c6ee445.png\" alt=\"View\" width=\"409\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This applies to the workplace as well.<\/p>\n<p>For everyday life, too.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important for us to be a little more imaginative as we consider possibilities in all areas, while also taking a close look at the situation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Doing so will minimize accidents and other problems as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>You think you're looking, but you're not really seeing!
