Recently, the requirements for opening bank accounts for foreign technical interns' salaries have become very strict.<\/p>\n

The reason is that I went to open a bank account for our Vietnamese technical intern.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As a result, the procedures were much stricter than last year, and identity verification\u2014including checking the names of accompanying individuals\u2014was also conducted.<\/p>\n

When I asked why, I was told that Vietnamese people who return home often sell their bankbooks before leaving, and that they\u2019re being very cautious about this issue.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is said that these stolen bankbooks end up in the hands of the yakuza and other underworld groups, where they are used for scams such as wire transfer fraud.<\/p>\n

As the person accompanying them, I was given a thorough explanation of these matters, and I was asked to make sure the Vietnamese technical interns understood them clearly.<\/p>\n

They also said they wanted me to come in so they could verify my information when I renew my Residence Card.<\/p>\n

About the Account Opening Process<\/h3>\n

As a general rule, the procedure for foreign customers to open a regular savings account or a regular savings deposit account in their own name is as follows.<\/p>\n

1. Please present your Residence Card when opening an account.<\/div>\n

\u3000Please present your Residence Card so that we can verify your nationality, status of residence, period of stay, and other details.
\nPlease note that diplomats and other individuals who have not been issued a Residence Card are not required to present one.<\/p>\n

2. If the expiration date of your period of stay falls within three months of the date you apply to open an account, please apply after you have completed the procedures for renewing your period of stay.<\/div>\n

\u3000If your period of stay expires within three months of the date you apply to open an account, we will be unable to open an account for you.
\nCustomers who plan to continue residing in Japan should complete the procedures to renew their period of stay and then submit their application with their new Residence Card, which reflects the renewed period of stay.
\nIf your period of stay, as determined at the time of entry, is three months or less and you have not been issued a Residence Card, you will not be able to open an account at Japan Post Bank or a post office.<\/p>\n

3. Please present your student ID, employee ID, or similar identification.<\/div>\n

\u3000If your status of residence is \u201cStudent\u201d or \u201cTechnical Intern Training,\u201d please present your student ID or employee ID card along with your Residence Card so that we can verify your enrollment status or employment details.
\nPlease note that we may contact your school or employer to verify your enrollment or employment status.<\/p>\n

4. It may take some time to open an account.<\/div>\n

\u3000When foreign nationals apply to open an account, the various verification procedures required under relevant laws and regulations may take some time. As a result, we may not be able to open the account on the day of application, and we may need to mail the passbook to the customer\u2019s home at a later date.
\nPlease note that, depending on the circumstances, we may decline to open an account for you.<\/p>\n
