{"id":4098,"date":"2017-08-04T08:00:30","date_gmt":"2017-08-03T23:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/?p=4098"},"modified":"2026-05-15T20:10:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T11:10:53","slug":"surface-tension-capillary-anchor-rebar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/norimen.net\/en\/surface-tension-capillary-anchor-rebar\/","title":{"rendered":"Capillary Action in Anchor Work | Why Water Seeps Out of PC Steel Strands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, everyone.<\/p>\n<p>This is Enta.<\/p>\n<p>The other day, an acquaintance of mine\u2014a construction manager and business owner\u2014passed away after a long battle with illness.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s a tough guy who made it in the cutthroat construction industry in just one generation.<\/p>\n<p>I, too, wish I could have met you a little sooner.<\/p>\n<p>May he rest in peace.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>But that's beside the point.<\/p>\n<h3>Capillary Phenomena in Anchor Work<\/h3>\n<p>Have you heard of capillary action?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-size: medium; color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E6%AF%9B%E7%B4%B0%E7%AE%A1%E7%8F%BE%E8%B1%A1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Capillary Action Wiki<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>That's the point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teibow.co.jp\/pen\/skill\/capillary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\">This video<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a>is very easy to understand.<\/p>\n<p>This phenomenon is commonly observed on slopes.<\/p>\n<p>Even though grout is being injected after drilling for rock bolts and anchors,<\/p>\n<p>Water comes out. This is caused by capillary action.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4099\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/0e3f1db4983e94bf1028c973453a7a3c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/0e3f1db4983e94bf1028c973453a7a3c.jpg 540w, https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/0e3f1db4983e94bf1028c973453a7a3c-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a water hose running underneath the PC steel strands shown in this photo.<\/p>\n<p>Since water is still flowing unceasingly even after the anchors were installed, we're using a hose to catch it and direct it downhill.<\/p>\n<p>The hose is inserted near the mouth, and the area around it is secured with mortar.<\/p>\n<p>This is,<strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Groundwater rises up through the areas where the grout adheres to the surrounding rock after injection, due to surface tension and capillary action on the grout\u2019s surface. (It is drawn up.)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4100\" src=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ab4bcab133500dd867572dd76859298e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ab4bcab133500dd867572dd76859298e.jpg 491w, https:\/\/norimen.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ab4bcab133500dd867572dd76859298e-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gakujoken.or.jp\/omoshiroW\/wonder\/fl-surface.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #0000ff;\">Surface Tension and Capillary Action<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Can I turn off the water?<\/h3>\n<p>People often tell me to stop doing this, but,<span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I can't stop.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same with earthwork\u2014once you\u2019ve disturbed (excavated) a hillside, there\u2019s nothing you can do about the spring water that comes out of it, right?<\/p>\n<p>In terms of mountain rock, the holes drilled by anchor installers and rebar installers are essentially just capillary-sized holes.<\/p>\n<p>It just sucks it right up.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the location, water may flow back through the injection hose\u2014from which grout was supposed to have been injected\u2014pushing the grout out of the hose.<\/p>\n<p>In such locations, be sure to bend the injection hose firmly when injecting through it.<\/p>\n<p>From a geological standpoint, it\u2019s safer to let the water flow out rather than stop it, as this helps maintain an unsaturated state.<\/p>\n<p>As a contractor, it\u2019s much easier to do the work when someone has a solid understanding of the plumbing layout.<\/p>\n<p>If there's a lot of water, it looks better to connect a hose and drain it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>See you later.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello, everyone.
